Professor Examines "Don Quijote"
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Jemison Visiting Professor Franscisco Carriscondo, Ph.D., noted for his achievements in Spanish linguistics and poetry, will deliver a free, public lecture, "Don Quijote y Los Centenarios de un Ideal," 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the UAB Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. S.
The lecture will be in Spanish. Carriscondo will discuss the importance and relevance of Miguel de Cervantes' novel "Don Quijote" 400 years after it was first published.
Carriscondo is a professor of Spanish linguistics at the University of Málaga, Spain. While at UAB, he is teaching an advanced Spanish course in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures through Aug. 3.
Carriscondo is an expert on the Spanish lexicon. He has published numerous journal articles. He has taught and conducted research in academic institutions in Spain, Argentina, Mexico, France, United States and Germany.

New Course (Fall 2005) This course examines the city of Madrid, Spain, in literature, film, and popular culture. Both the fictional and non-fictional city is explored. The course offers an understanding of Madrid’s complicated relationship within Spain, to Europe, and to the world. Students will study Madrid as court and capital. They will also examine the French occupation, Spanish Civil War, Franco’s cradle, and the new Madrid of immigrants, terrorists, and wealth. The course considers U.S., European, Latin American, and select African perspectives on Madrid, which was once the seat of the Spanish Empire and currently has one of the most vibrant economies and cultural climates in the European Union.
