Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship Information
The Japanese Government Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho or MEXT) sponsors the Monbukagakusho Scholarship to enable foreign students from 160 countries to study Japanese language and culture at the undergraduate level, to train in methods of teaching Japanese as a foreign language, and to research a broad range of topics at the graduate level in Japanese universities. Don Quijote Study
Abroad Scholarship
One scholarship will be awarded to a continuing or graduating Spanish major or minor to study abroad for two weeks in Guanajuato, México at Don Quijote Language School in May 2008.
The scholarship is provided by don Quijote (www.donquijote.org) and covers Spanish classes and accommodation. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will also furnish a $500.00 award to support all or part of the recipient’s air travel to Mexico.

FIESTA Scholarship
FIESTA Scholarship: Attention Hispanic Heritage Students. This scholarship is provided by a generous donation from FIESTA, Birmingham's premiere celebration of Hispanic culture and heritage, see http://www.fiestahbc.com/home.html.
Two primarily merit-based scholarships of $2,500.00 each will be awarded in 2008 for two continuing or entering UAB students of Hispanic heritage for the 2008-09 academic year. Eligible students from all majors will be considered.
Qualified students must:
- self-identify as Hispanic
- have minimum 3.0 GPA
- be active in Manos Juntas and/or other Hispanic groups on UAB campus
- be a volunteer at FIESTA (Oct. 2008)
- promote Hispanic culture on UAB campus and community

Portia Foxx Brooks and Hazel Ruth Boswell Foxx Study Abroad Scholarship
One award per year of $500. One merit-based scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who meets the following criteria:
- Applicants must demonstrate a passion for the Italian language and culture. This may be perceived by the applicant’s participation in organizations such as Italian clubs, Italian conversation tables, Italian tutoring, community lectures, articles, etc.
- Applicants must have applied and been admitted to a UAB faculty led program in Italy. Said program must be in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
- Applicants must demonstrate a passion for the Italian language and culture. This may be perceived by the applicant’s participation in organizations such as Italian clubs, Italian conversation tables, Italian tutoring, community lectures, articles, etc.
- Applicants for the Portia Foxx Brooks and Hazel Ruth Boswell Foxx Scholarship must have completed at least Introductory Italian I (ITL 101) and Introductory Italian II (ITL 102) or its equivalent.
- Applicants should demonstrate academic promise and have earned at least a 3.00 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in coursework completed prior to the time of application.
To be considered for the scholarship applicants should submit:
- Scholarship application along with one copy of your college transcript
- Two letters of recommendation from people who know you well and can comment on your academic and career goals.

Tunisian Community Center Study Abroad Scholarship
2007-2009 Tunisian Community Center Study Abroad Scholarship.
One award of $5,000.00. One scholarship will be awarded for a UAB student pursuing a B.A. or B.S. who show serious commitment to the studying of Arabic at UAB. The Tunisian Community Center Study-Abroad Scholarship is based on merit and involvement in Arabic community/student service activities, and a commitment to North-African and Middle-Eastern studies. Financial need may be considered.
This scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving student of Arabic at UAB to study in Tunisia for a semester (approved study-abroad program), and is a gift made to the department by the Tunisian Community Center. www.tunisiancommunity.org
