2004.12.1 Resolution in support of the QEP ProposalResolution in support of the QEP Proposal

Whereas the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Committee has proposed an initial plan to further develop UAB’s core curriculum to improve student learning and student functioning as individuals and citizens beyond graduation, and

Whereas this plan has four major elements for the enrichment of the core curriculum, including communication, knowledge, problem-solving and citizenship, and

Whereas, the QEP committee has identified three core competencies in writing, quantitative literacy, and ethics/civic responsibility as initial targets for this enhancement program, and

Whereas, continued faculty involvement in both implementation and assessment strategies will be important to the success of these efforts, and

Whereas, these proposed changes will require additional resources for faculty development, training, and support,

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the UAB Faculty Senate endorses these major concepts proposed by the QEP committee and encourages faculty, students and staff to support the implementation of these enhancement goals of the UAB core curriculum, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the UAB Faculty Senate requests that appropriate institutional resources and infrastructure be made available, to assure the successful implementation and assessment of the QEP plan.


2004.10.1 Resolution Honoring The Accomplishments and Service of Dr. Albert F. LoBuglio

Whereas, Dr. Albert F. LoBuglio has served as Director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center for 22 years, and

Whereas, Dr. LoBuglio is an internationally recognized expert in tumor immunology and is a pioneer in the study of the use of monoclonal antibodies for cancer therapy, and

Whereas, Dr. LoBuglio’s efforts as Director have fostered tremendous scientific growth and achievement within the Center and within UAB, and

Whereas, under Dr. LoBuglio’s leadership, the Cancer Center has expanded its basic and clinical research and improved clinical services to a large group of patients, and

Whereas, Dr. LoBuglio’s leadership has resulted in great national and international recognition of the accomplishments of more than 250 UAB physicians and scientists and has resulted in more than $100 million in extramural research funding, including four prestigious SPORE translational programs for breast, ovarian, prostate and brain cancers, and

Whereas, Dr. LoBuglio has announced his intention to devote more time to his research program, by relinquishing his position as Director,

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the UAB Faculty Senate express our great appreciation to Dr. LoBuglio for his many efforts on behalf of the Cancer Center and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

2004.6.1 Resolution Commending the Service of John A. Smith, M.D., Ph.D.

WHEREAS, John A. Smith, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Clinical Pathology and Director of the Division of Laboratory Medicine in the Department of Pathology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, has served with distinction as the Chair of the UAB Faculty and its Senate for the academic year, 2003-2004; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Smith received his undergraduate education from Purdue University in 1969; a Master of Science degree from University of Melbourne in 1971; a Medical Doctorate degree from the University of Missouri-School of Medicine in 1974; and a Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne in 1978; and a Master of Medical Management from Tulane University in 1998; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Smith began his career at The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1993, where he has taught residents, undergraduate and graduate students, and performed clinical laboratory services; and

WHEREAS, throughout his tenure, Dr. Smith has exemplified faculty dedication to the mission of The University of Alabama at Birmingham in teaching, research and publishing, and service; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Smith’s service has been demonstrated particularly by his outstanding work on the UAB Faculty Senate in such capacities as Chair-Elect in 2002-2003 and Chair in 2003-2004; as Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama for the academic year 2003-2004; as Chair of the Faculty Council’s Promotion and Tenure Committee 1995-2000; as a Member of the Performance Improvement Core Advisory Team at UAB Hospital 1997-2001; the Interdisciplinary Trauma Quality Improvement Committee since 1998; the Critical Care Oversight Committee since 1999; and the Women’s Issues Steering Committee since 2000; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by The Faculty Senate of The University of Alabama at Birmingham that it expresses its sincere appreciation to Dr. John A. Smith for his service, his hard work, his dedication, and his many contributions to The University of Alabama at Birmingham and to the UAB Faculty Senate.
