Contact Information RESEARCH DESCRIPTION My interests involve using x-ray crystallography to perform structure-function studies of membrane and aqueous proteins and with particular emphasis on the cystic fibrosis trans-membrane regulator protein (CFTR), the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC), and several different G-protein coupled receptors implicated in immune-related diseases and cancer, osteoprotegrin (important in bone biology/pathology), and one structure-based drug development project involving the protein target, USP2a (a deubiquinating enzyme that may play an important role in prostate cancer). In addition, my laboratory has a long history of developing novel biotechnologies with most of our past inventions focused on crystallization methods/devices and novel approaches that enhance/improve protein therapeutic formulations. BIOGRAPHY Dr. DeLucas received both his undergraduate and graduate training at UAB before taking a faculty position in the Center for Macromolecular Crystallography (the name was changed to the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering in 1999). He serves as the Director of the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering with a primary appointment in the Department of Optometry. Dr. DeLucas flew as a payload specialist on the United States Microgravity Laboratory-1 flight, Mission STS-50, in June1992. His work is currently funded through NASA and the National Institutes of Health. |
