Areas of Focus:  Basic science and translational studies in pursuit of our research interests which are to understand the molecular and biochemical mechanisms by which nitric oxide and nitrite interact with different organs and red blood cells and how these impact upon biological processes associated with blood flow regulation and pulmonary function during hypoxia, inflammation (associated with Sepsis) or in response to inhaled irritants (e.g. chlorine gas).

RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

We incorporate basic science and translational studies in pursuit of our research interests which are to understand the molecular basis of nitric oxide and nitrite interactions with different organs and red blood cells and how these impact upon biological processes associated with blood flow regulation and pulmonary function during hypoxia, inflammation (associated with Sepsis) or in response to inhaled irritants (e.g. chlorine gas). These basic science studies provide the foundation for translational studies that are beginning to evaluate nitric oxide and nitrite-based therapeutics in the clinic. In addition, we are interested in defining how redox cell signaling pathways are involved in the regression of inflammation and what role these play during chronic inflammatory diseases such as atherosclerosis. In this context we are also investigating the mechanisms that operate within the endothelium to control leukocyte interactions that occur during inflammatory vascular disease and how dietary/environmental factors affect this.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Rakesh Patel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Director of the Department of Pathology Graduate Program.  He received his B.S. degree from the University of Essex, Colchester, Essex, England in 1993 and his PhD. Degree in 1996 also from the University of Essex.  Dr. Patel completed his postdoctoral training at UAB in the Department of Pathology in 1999.  He joined the UAB faculty in 1999.
