The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the Dr. Lydia L. Alexander Endowed Student Award in Education during its meeting June 14, 2013. Alexander joined UAB in 1974 and served in numerous academic units including six years as assistant dean in the School of Education. She secured more than $3 million in extramural funding for federal grant programs at UAB before her retirement in 1998.Support Fund for Infectious Diseases Endowed

Glenn Cobbs Endowed Support Fund in Infectious Diseases, named for the professor emeritus in the UAB School of Medicine who provided founding leadership to the Division of Infectious Diseases.Endowed Scholarship in Medicine EstablishedThe University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the Herschell Lee Hamilton, M.D., Endowed Scholarship in Medicine, which will support African-American students in the UAB School of Medicine who have demonstrated academic promise and financial need. Hamilton was the first board-certified African-American general surgeon in the area when he moved to Birmingham in 1958. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.Three Endowed Optometry Scholarships EstablishedScholarships will benefit future optometry students.Endowed Optometry Award Established
The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the Schaeffer Eye Center Endowed Optometry Award, which award will support deserving students in the UAB School of Optometry. Jack L.
