Endowed Scholarship in Medicine Established

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the Herschell Lee Hamilton, M.D., Endowed Scholarship in Medicine, which will support African-American students in the UAB School of Medicine who have demonstrated academic promise and financial need. Hamilton was the first board-certified African-American general surgeon in the area when he moved to Birmingham in 1958. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
