International Recruitment and Student Services provides services, programs and activities that enhance cultural awareness, international education and research opportunities for students, faculty and staff. IRSS recruits and advises international students and assists visiting international faculty and students in matters of immigration, federal and state taxation and orientation to the Birmingham community.
UAB’s international mentors program provides international students with valuable information about UAB, Birmingham and the United States, and the Smolian International House is a focal point for programs and activities that foster a free exchange of information and international understanding among people of all nations, races and cultures.
The English Language Institute offers English as a Second Language courses for non-native English speakers in the UAB community and in the central Alabama region. It is a cross-cultural training resource for Americans and internationals in the Birmingham area.
Graduate and undergraduate student organizations celebrate the many cultures at UAB and promote cross-cultural understanding. UAB Community Week celebrates UAB’s diverse student body and workforce by encouraging unity, dialogue and learning and creating cultural awareness through art, food and musical presentations. The UAB Multicultural Council celebrates diversity, encourages unity and promotes intercultural interactions between all communities of people at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
