Graduate Student Research Days 2011: CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

 Graduate Student Research Days 2013

Each spring semester, graduate students from all UAB academic departments are invited to present the results of their research in the Graduate Student Research Days (GSRD) competition. Because of the popularity of GSRD, the planning committee has revised the competition rules and changed the event schedule for this year’s competition.

The following schedule is for the 2013 competition:

January 25, 12:00 p.m. (noon) - Deadline for abstract submission

February 22 - Master's presentations are due in the Graduate School offices, HUC 511, no later than 7:00 p.m.

February 25 - Doctoral presentations are due in the Graduate School offices, HUC 511, no later than 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday, February 26 - Graduate Student Research Days Competition for Master’s students, HUC Great Hall

Wednesday & Thursday, February 27 & 28 - Graduate Student Research Days Competition for Doctoral students, HUC Great Hall

Friday, March 8, 2013 - Graduate School Awards Luncheon, Bartow Arena Green & Gold Room

If you are interested in participating in this year's competition, read the competition rules located at If you are eligible to compete, complete the electronic abstract form and follow the instructions for submission. As pointed out in the competition rules, abstracts submitted by eligible UAB graduate students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Graduate Student Spotlight 

This month’s Student Spotlight is Jake Nelson, a recent graduate from the master’s program in mechanical engineering. Jake’s research involves computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which is used to simulate fluid flow through a domain with given boundary conditions: “The purpose of my Master’s thesis is to allow for CFD simulations to be formed for complex flows around complex geometries.”

Jake is also a 2012 recipient of the Samuel B. Barker Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies ( at the master’s level. The Barker Award, named for UAB’s first graduate dean, is awarded each spring semester to one doctoral and one master’s student.

The graduates of UAB's Graduate School take part in two ceremonies: The Doctoral Hooding Ceremony and the Commencement are held each May and December. August graduates may attend the December commencement. The Doctoral Hooding Ceremony is the commencement for doctoral candidates receiving PhD, DrPH, EdD. DSc, and DScPT degrees. Both ceremonies will take place on Saturday, May 11. All other doctoral candidates should check with your program or school for graduation ceremony information. 

If you are a receiving a PhD, DrPH, EdD, DSc, or DScPT in May 2013, you must fill out the commencement form by April 26 located at in order to participate in this ceremony. Simply showing up for the ceremony is not an option. The Doctoral Hooding Ceremony will be held in the Alys Stephens Center at 12:00 p.m.

The commencement ceremonies for master's, Ed.S. and undergraduate students will be held in Bartow Arena at 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., according to school. Commencement information for all non-doctoral graduates is located at

Graduate School Offices Relocating

 Graduate School Offices Relocating

Construction on the new UAB Student Center will begin in summer 2013. All university units that currently reside within the Hill Center will be temporarily housed at various locations on campus while the new building is being constructed. However, the Graduate School will relocate permanently to the first floor of the Lister Hill Library for the Health Sciences, located between Volker Hall and the Eye Foundation Hospital at 1700 University Boulevard.

“We have devised a plan to help make the transition to our new space as smooth as possible,” said Dean Bryan Noe. “We want to assure graduate students that the services we provide will not be interrupted during the move.”

The Graduate School is tentatively scheduled to move to Lister Hill Library in May 2013. Updates on the progress of the Graduate School’s move to Lister Hill will be posted periodically at

 Writing Successfully Workshop

Suffer from writer’s block? Make a New Year’s resolution to show progress on a publication project? Don’t worry. There is still time to enroll in Writing Successfully, GRD 708, a one-day Saturday workshop on Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Offered by the UAB Graduate School’s Professional Development Program, the 1-credit hour workshop helps writers jumpstart their process with “best practices” for completing projects. These practices serve writers working across disciplines and a variety of professional writing tasks, ranging from course papers and grants to theses and journal articles. Through discussion, analysis and practice, participants acquire new writing and editing strategies while working with published writers and veteran writing coaches. Are You Stressed? Need to Vent? Let’s Talk!

The Counseling & Wellness Center is hosting a weekly support group for all of our exhausted graduate students. The goal of this gathering is to find ways to reduce stress by finding a reliable place to drop in, safely share, problem-solve, and to be heard. ‘Let’s Talk’ will be held every Friday from 1:00-2:00 pm in the Shelby Building, room 515. The 2016 Graduate School Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship Ceremony drew more than 120 people to celebrate the honoree's achievements. Read more ...

Nursing PhD students Bray, Mumbower and Pavicevic named 2016 Jonas Scholars

Leigh Ann Bray, Rachael Mumbower and Zoran Pavicevic will receive $10,000 each during the next two years from the Jonas Center, which is focused on expanding the pipeline of nursing faculty and advanced practice nurses. The UAB School of Nursing will match this funding.
