Joel Anderson, a native of Anderson, SC, began pursuing a master’s degree in biomedical engineering at UAB since August, 2006. His research focuses on tissue engineering, creating bone tissue from adult stem cells.

After graduating from Clemson University with a BS in biosystems engineering, Joel chose UAB to continue his academic career because of  “the well-established research and medical facilities available, and the opportunity to diversify my education by studying at a different institution.” Joel has been awarded an NIH training grant to be used for his master’s and doctoral studies.

Joel believes that UAB has allowed him to mature in many aspects. “My most rewarding experience at UAB has been the realization of how far I have grown as a student, researcher, and adult over my challenging but rewarding graduate studies.” Outside of UAB, Joel credits his family for being a major influence. “My family has always been there to provide support and advice throughout, always helping to find what is best for me.”

Being motivated to put forth the best possible effort in order to make a meaningful contribution back to society has served Joel well. His advice to other graduate students is as follows: “Put yourself in situations that are right for you at that time, and with hard work, you will find success. Best of luck to all pursuing graduate studies!”

Joel’s future plans include pursuing a PhD and finding a tissue engineering job in industry.
