GS:       Where are you from?

KW:      Birmingham, Alabama.

GS:       What degree will you receive and when?

KW:      MA in Art History- this August.

GS:       How long have you been at UAB?

KW:      I have been here since the Fall of 2008.

GS:       What is your research?

KW:      Contemporary art, specifically issues in animal art.

GS:       What made you choose UAB for your graduate studies?

KW:      This is my hometown. I like the location, and I like the fact that it is a joint program in conjunction with the University of Alabama.

GS:       Have you received any awards or honors?

KW:      I was accepted into the Golden Key National Honor Society.

GS:       What has been your most rewarding experience at UAB?

KW:      Gaining experience in teaching. It is really rewarding to present material you are interested in to students.

GS:       Who was your greatest influence here at UAB and why?

KW:      Honestly, there are many people who have positively influenced me. The faculty and staff of the Art History program are all wonderful, as well as so many students and fellow members of the program that have been enthusiastic and supportive.

GS:       What is your motivation in your academics/research?

KW:      To bring to light issues that affect the world at large. Art is very powerful, and it has the ability to influence people across all walks of life.

GS:       What are your plans after graduating and for the future?

KW:      I would like to work in the art world. I am very interested in working for non-profits. I hope to eventually move somewhere new and interesting.

Kelley’s advice for other graduate students:

This is a time in your life to focus on yourself and your studies. Don't let outside factors distract you from your work, because it takes so much effort and dedication to get to this level- you don't want to let anything ruin that.
