Anne Bailey

Anne Bailey is a first generation Southerner working on her MA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. Anne, a single mother, works full-time in her family’s printing company while taking classes part-time.

Anne is working on a collection of poems, whose theme and inspiration comes from her work with Dr. Flowers Braswell, a medievalist in the English department. She explains, “I am researching the medieval female English mystic, the anchoress, who lived as solitary urban recluses in the Middle Ages. The fictional voice of the anchoress in the poems is combined with accurate research.” Anne credits studying with Dr. Braswell as her most rewarding experience at UAB, adding, “Dr. Braswell is a fantastic scholar and a very exciting teacher. Also, having the opportunity to work with Dr. Bob Collins in poetry writing workshops has been a real gift.”

Aside from living in the area, the fact that the English department offers an MA in English with the Creative Writing concentration is what attracted Anne to UAB. “This option allows me to take lots of literature classes along with creative writing classes.” Anne is no stranger to graduate level work. She holds an MFA in Book Arts, which she received from the School of Library and Information Services at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Dr. Bob Collins has been Anne’s greatest influence at UAB. “As an undergrad at Barnard College, I studied East Asian Studies with a concentration in Chinese. But I really wanted to be an English major. When I turned 43, I decided to pursue my original goal of being a poet and scholar, and so I applied to UAB. As soon as I met Dr. Bob Collins, I knew I was in the right place. He became a mentor. Last year he introduced me to the poet Diane Wakoski, whose work has been highly influential to me for many years. She is now on my Master's Thesis committee. Dr Collins' work as a poet is also an inspiration for me, given his tremendous precision of language combined with the depth of his intellect and heart.”

Motivation has never been a problem for Anne. She explains, “Without a doubt, my motivation in graduate school is a combination of a lifelong love of reading and writing poetry, an abiding passion for literature, and a deepening desire to do scholarly research, particularly in the area of medieval studies.”

Anne plans on pursuing and PhD in Medieval Studies while continuing to work as a writer. Her honors include memberships in Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, and the Golden Key International Honour Society.
