Dr. Ian Knowles, a full professor in the Mathematics Department, has been a UAB faculty member for 29 years. He received his BSc in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Adelaide and his MSc and PhD in Mathematics from Flinders University of South Australia.

The Applied Mathematics doctoral program here at UAB celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2008 and Dr. Knowles was responsible for the set-up of the department computing facility both in hardware and software. One colleauge writes, "This facility was critical for the numerical-based research conducted by Professor Knowles' students."

A common theme that runs through the nomination letters for Dr. Knowles is his ability to make the most difficult mathematical concepts understandable. One trainee writes, "Even in the advanced graduate level courses, Dr. Knowles has given us the big picture first without burying us in technicalities and has allowed us to focus on the parts that we liked or would be useful to us in research. This is remarkable because abstract mathematics tends to be highly technical and it is easy to get lost in the details. Dr. Knowles not only gives great explanations but makes the content enjoyable through anecdotes and lively discussions."
