When applying to a graduate program, please note the following requirements during the application process:

  • If you were born in a country other than the United States, but claim United States citizenship, we require proof of United States citizenship as part of the application process.  Please submit a copy of your United States passport to gradschool@uab.edu.  
  • If you are a permanent resident, we require a copy of the front and back of a valid green card as part of the application process.  Please submit a copy of the front and back of your valid green card to gradschool@uab.edu
  • If you are international and currently in the United States, we require immigration documentation as part of the application process.  Please submit a copy of your immigration documentation (I-20, DS-2019, visa stamp, I-94, I-797, etc.) to gradschool@uab.edu.  If you are admitted, it will be forwarded to the International Recruitment & Student Services Office for review so they can determine if your paperwork is sufficient for their purposes.
  • If you are international but are overseas at the time of applying, or if you are international and applying to an online-only program, we do not require immigration documentation.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham will accept satisfactory TOEFL or IELTS proficiency examinations for admission to graduate programs. Test scores must be sent directly from the testing institution.

Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit an official TOEFL or IELTS test score that is not more than five (5) years old. Applicants who have received a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. institution or from institutions in countries where English is the primary language are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS score. Some departments may require the TOEFL or IELTS regardless of previous educational experience.

International applicants must present a transcript/marksheet and degree statement which are the equivalent of a 4-year bachelor’s degree from the United States to be eligible for admission consideration.

CERTIFIED TRANSLATIONS

  • We will accept a transcript evaluation from World Education Services (www.wes.org) or Educational Credential Evaluators (www.ece.org). We do not recognize transcript evaluations from other companies. If the graduate department allows a transcript evaluation from another company, it will be at their own discretion. Please note that a transcript evaluation can be used in conjunction with (not in lieu of) the official transcript/marksheet and degree statement. The only exception is the WES International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) as it includes verified copies of the official transcript/marksheet and degree statement.
  • The translator must be authorized to translate the original language to English.
  • An official stamp and signature of the authorzied translator must accompany the translation.
  • Translations must be word-for-word, not interpretations of meaning.
  • Original translations must be submitted to the Graduate School. Photocopied, faxed or scanned translations are not accepted.
  • The issuing institution may issue a translation; however it must bear the institution's official stamp.

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

  • An official stamp must accompany the official transcript.
  • Official transcripts must be in the original language of the international institution as well as in English.
  • Original transcripts must be submitted to the Graduate School. Photocopies, faxed or scanned transcripts are not accepted as official.
  • Official transcripts must be submitted from all institutions attended.

OFFICIAL PROOF OF DEGREE

  • An official stamp from the issuing institution must accompany the photocopy of your degree.
  • Official proof of degree must be in the original language of the international institution as well as in English.
  • Original transcripts must be submitted to the Graduate School. Photocopies, faxed, or scanned transcripts are considered to be unofficial. If you only have one set of original documents, please submit unofficial copies for review purposes. If admitted, you can bring your original transcript/marksheet and degree statement to the Graduate School so we can verify their authenticity in person and make copies for our records. This will allow you to keep the original documents.
  • Do not submit your original proof of degree.

AFFIDAVIT OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT
• Carefully read the instructions and accurately complete the Affidavit of Financial Support form.
• Ensure that your total funds meet the minimum financial obligation.
• If you leave the form blank or do not return the form, you will be required to submit a new one before your visa can be processed.
• If you have a sponsor, the sponsor's signature is required.
• Indicate a UAB assistantship only if you have already been awarded the departmental assistantship.

BANK STATEMENT
• Must be an original with the stamp/seal of the bank and an official bank signature.
• Bank statement must be an original. Photocopied, faxed or scanned copies will not be accepted.
• Must be in English or have a certified English translation.
• Date on statement cannot be more than 1 year old.
• Must indicate "deposit balance" in US$.
• Must include name of the bank, date statement was prepared, student's name or sponsor's name (in English).

CURRENT VISA STUDENTS
• A copy of your I-20, I-49, and visa stamp.
• If you are on OPT, include a copy of your Employment Authorization Card.
• The I-20 requires your home country address. A P.O. Box or University Address can be used as your home country address. Without the home country address, we cannot issue the I-20.

CORRECT F2 VISA STUDENTS
• A copy of your I-20, I-94, and visa stamp.
• A copy of your spouse's I-20.
• Please note where you plan to change your visa, either in the U.S. or in your home country.

CURRENT H1 VISA STUDENTS
• Please note where you obtained your H1 visa, either in the U.S. or in your home country.
• If you received the H1 visa in the U.S., submit a copy of your H1B approval notification approval stamp.
• Please note if you plan to change your H1 to F1 visa, and if so, where: in the U.S. or in your home country.

CURRENT H4 VISA STUDENTS
• Submit a copy of your H4 visa or approval notice, I-94 and visa stamp.
• Submit a copy of your spouse's H1 visa or approval notice.
• Please note if you plan to change your H4 to F1 visa and whether it will be changed in the U.S. or your home country.
