Action Item One:  Considering a request to eliminate the GRE requirement for the post-master’s Ed.S. Collaborative Autism Spectrum Disorder from the School of Education. Dr. Worthington introduced Karen Dahle as the head of the Autism Spectrum Disorder program in the School of Education. Changes in mandates at the state level now require teachers to take a minimum of three national and one state test before they are allowed to teach in the state. The requirement of the GRE or MAT along with the state testing requirements is beginning to hurt the students financially and it is serving as a deterrent for applying. Beginning September 1, 2013, one of the required national tests will have to be taken prior to admission. This requires students to pay for multiple tests. Depending on the prospective student’s background, some may have already taken the tests prior to admission to the Ed.S. Program. After September 1, 2013 it will be mandatory that they have passed the state level exam before being admitted. By the time the students enter the program at the six years of experience level, there is already data on each of their teaching experiences and their successes. The request is to eliminate the GRE and MAT and only require the national and state tests. The students that enter the program already have their master’s degree. The students entering the program have a minimum of five years teaching experience. The students are candidates for supervisor or special education director positions. The degree is to enhance the student’s career progression in their field. Students are in midcareer and the GRE is not predictive of their success. Motion was made to accept the proposal, followed by a second. The committee voted unanimously to approve the request.

Action Item Two:  Review of a proposal to establish a Certificate in Life Science Entrepreneurship from the School of Business. ADCOM member Dr. Doug Ayers presented the proposal and responded to questions and comments. The process for this proposal began in 2004, but it was never brought forward and officially approved. The proposal is now being presented to ADCOM for official recognition.  The course work for the certificate has been offered off and on since 2004-05. Over the last several years, the Business School has reestablished teaching the classes and has offered them as standalone MBA courses. Typically the class composition in these courses is 60% non-MBA students, and 40% are MBA students. Recently incorporated into the course sequence is I2I which has some grant funding to support it. Several students work as a cohort through the course sequence to develop technology which could be marketed outside UAB. I2I is not a single course; it is a mechanism for bundling the courses together within the program.  The proposed title is: Certificate in Technology, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship. Motion was made to approve the proposal with changes to the title. No further discussion. Committee members voted to approve. 

Action Item Three:  Review of a proposal from CAS to automatically grant graduate faculty status to new faculty appointments.  The request from David Schwebel was reviewed along with a slide from a presentation given By Dean Noe to department chairs regarding how the Graduate School handles faculty appointments.  The current process is the Dean of the Graduate School approves each request. A record of scholarly activity is reviewed, and for junior faculty who has not had mentoring experience, there is usually a stipulation on the approval that they not serve as the chair of a dissertation or thesis committee, or as primary advisor to a student without chair approval for one to two years. New faculty should have an opportunity to serve on committees as just a committee member before mentoring a student. ADCOM members discussed the process with respect its impact on their respective programs. In order to teach at the graduate level, the faculty member must have graduate faculty status. The Ad Hoc and Adjunct statuses were discussed. The consensus from the ADCOM committee was to continue the process already in place.
