Meeting began with the introduction of ADCOM members and guests.
Review of a NISP from the Education School proposing the establishment of a Ph.D. degree program entitled Diversity Studies in Education. Drs. McKnight and Spezzini responded to questions.
The proposed program will examine educational policy and practice and how they affect diverse populations. Considering increasing population diversity, the program is being created to encompass as many populations as possible. The structure of the program will be traditional with a 24 credit course work core, combined with standard courses with mixed methodology. Some of the core of classes will be offered outside of the School of Education. Research credits will be accumulated as required.
Four concentrations will be offered: 1) Leadership studies; The PhD program in Educational Leadership will become inactive. The leadership studies concentration in the proposed program will fill the void for students who want a more research intensive doctoral program. 2) Pedagogical studies in curriculum development. It may appeal to education professionals who wish to complete a doctorate in education but who wish to apply their expertise in the non-profit environment. 3) Metropolitan education studies. This will create an urban education concentration that is more appropriate for individuals who perform research in areas that relate to suburban or urban contexts. 4) Diverse Population studies. This concentration will prepare education professionals to work more effectively with English language learners.
Question: What is the predicted relative interest in each of the tracks by prospective students? Response: Leadership studies will initially be the larger draw. Metro Ed will potentially dominate at some point. A survey will be used to assess the interest of each track.
Question: Will the Ed.D. in Ed Leadership program stay in place? Response: The program will be continued as individuals interested in securing positions as principals will continue to want the Ed.D.
Question: Could you provide further clarification regarding the focus of the program for diversity? Response: The research focus will be the difference. The new program will be for people who want to look at how data can be used to enhance the effectiveness of those in leadership positions. Educators who don’t want to be principals are thinking forward regarding the possibility of securing higher ed faculty positions. The research focus in the Ph.D. program will differentiate it from the Ed.D. degree. The field has a need for individuals who perform research on demographics and articulate research agendas for diverse populations.
Question: With the joint program ending, will the PhD still be offered at UA? The PhD will still be offered by UA. ADCOM: Where will staffing will come from? The staffing will be faculty members from the department of foundation and diversity.
Question: How many courses and credit hours will be required? The program will be 72-75 credit hours for the doctoral program. Most courses are already in place. The metro and urban courses are in place now and have been approved by ACHE. Grant funding is available for faculty who perform research on urban studies.
The program will not compete with existing programs at UA or AU. It is predicted to have a regional and national impact.
A motion to approve was made and seconded. There was further discussion regarding the course offerings. ADCOM committee members then voted to approve the NISP.
