GSA Activities
The GSA sponsors the following social and academic activities using graduate student service fees. Upon approval, the GSA may provide some financial support for other graduate student groups organized events. Please see the Funding link.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
In conjunction with the Graduate Career Awareness and Trends (GCAT), the GSA sponsors an annual Career Workshop on nonacademic and academic careers for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the sciences. This is held in the Spring and students must register for this one credit hour workshop under GRD 710. See the current class schedule for details.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
The GSA organizes a number of social and volunteering activities during the semester. Ranging from free outings to Regions Park for the Birmingham Barons, Habitat for Humanity, trail cleanup at Ruffner Park and get togethers at Railroad Park. Contact the Activities Chair if you have something you'd like to see programmed.
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
Held in the fall, this event provides the opportunity for community businesses, students groups and UAB administrators to provide information to new graduate students. Dinner is provided. GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH DAY
GSA members assist the Graduate School and Sigma Xi in sponsoring Research Day, an annual competition in which graduate students present their research. Awards are given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each of the research categories.
