Keron De Laney
Country of Origin: San Fernando, Trinidad
DOB: 6/5/85
Aliment: Severe Coarctation of the Aorta

In October of 1994, a pulsating mass suddenly developed on the left side of Keron De Laney's neck.  Alarmed, his mother Ann Marie immediately took him to see a doctor at the local clinic in San Fernando.  It was during that examination that a systolic heart murmur was detected and the young man was referred to Dr. Joan Knan, one of the few pediatric cardiologist on the island of Trinidad.  After an echocardiogram, Keron was diagnosed as suffering from severe coarctation of the aorta.

This term describes a condition where the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body is too narrow at one point.  This narrowing disrupts blood flow to the rest of the body.  In addition, Keron's aortic valve leaked, magnifying the severity of his coartation.  This cardiac deformity could not be corrected in Trinidad and the cost of seeking care abroad was overwhelming to Keron's family.

Through the efforts of Dr. Knan and Savitri Nobbee, a medical social worker in Trinidad, Heart to Heart International was able to help Keron.  In the mid-summer of 1995, Keron and his mother traveled to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center.  Dr. Ed V. Colvin was the pediatric cardiologist for this child and Dr. Al Pacifico surgically corrected the malformation on July 17, 1995.

On August 7th, Keron and his mother returned to Trinidad.  In post-operative examinations, his recovered was described as "excellent."
