UAB Campus Services

UAB is a city within a city. Behind the classrooms and patient rooms are numerous services available to those who work and live within the UAB community. The following is a growing list of those services and information on how to access them.

Alumni Affairs
The Office of Alumni Affairs works closely with the UAB National Alumni Society to form a variety of innovative programs that foster alumni loyalty, involvement, and support. The office maintains communication with alumni through publications, direct mail, and telephone contact. Ongoing activities include managing the UAB license plate and UAB Master Card programs; publishing the UAB Alumni Gazette and UAB Magazine; and working with alumni board committees to further the UAB alumni relations program. Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts
The Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center, located on campus at UAB, welcomes over 250,000 people each year for more than 300 diverse events. This state-of-the-art facility houses a 1,330-seat concert hall, a 350-seat theatre, a 175-seat recital hall, and a 150-seat studio theatre. The ASC box office is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., and one hour prior to performance time on weekdays. For weekend performance dates, the box office will open at noon. The Annual Fund
The Annual Fund is designed for alumni who want to make gifts to directly support the individual schools at UAB from which they graduated. Because these tax-deductible gifts are unrestricted, they can be used where they are needed most, and where they will deliver the greatest benefit to students. AskIT!
The AskIT help desk is the point of contact in the multi-tiered help desk service. AskIT provides free phone support or in-person computer support for all UAB researchers, faculty, staff, and students (by appointment).

Benevolent Fund for Faculty and Staff
The UAB Faculty and Staff Benevolent Fund was founded as a system of supporting charitable, service and health agencies to help those in need in the Birmingham area.

BlazerNET
BlazerNET is the official portal to the UAB community of intranets and key software?and the most reliable source of UAB information for faculty, staff, and students. Bookstore (Barnes & Noble at UAB)

You'll find everything you expect from a full-service, on-campus bookstore at Barnes & Noble at UAB. Broadcast News Service
The department is responsible for encouraging and coordinating broadcast news coverage of UAB locally, regionally, and nationally. Broadcast News Service is a division of UAB Media Relations. Campus Recreation Center
UAB's Campus Recreation is already scoring points and setting standards with its innovative approach to fun and fitness. For the first time in Birmingham, you'll discover everything under one roof?free weights, court sports, swimming pools, aerobics classes, nutrition education, fitness areas, a climbing wall. And that?s just for starters. The best part is that the UAB community has exclusive access to this one-of-a-kind facility.

Career Services
Career-related services are available for students and alumni of UAB at three campus locations. The main office is located in the Hill University Center and caters to all majors. Two branch offices, located in the School of Business and in the School of Engineering, work exclusively with the majors in those respective schools. Career Counseling
Students wanting to find out more about their individual career choices and their majors may want to receive career counseling. A trained counselor is available to meet with students to discuss interests, personality and abilities to help determine what career direction might be suitable. You can find out what UAB majors relate to your career choices. The counselor may use various assessments such as interest or personality inventories to help the student clarify their options. Catering Services
A full range of catering is available from UAB Campus Catering. Services range from breakfast to lunches to reception to full course meals. UAB Child Development Center
UAB provides child care to families with a UAB affiliation through the UAB Child Development Center. Located at 1113 15th Street South. Enrollment at the center is limited to 100 children. A $25 non-refundable application fee is required to get on the waiting list. Phone: 975-7373. Fax: 975-7374.

UAB Campus Restaurants provides an exciting and innovative dining services program for the entire UAB community. Employee Assistance Program (The Resource Center)
The Resource Center is the employee assistance and counseling service for UAB employees and their families. The Resource Center provides assistance to faculty and staff in supervision and managerial roles who have employees experiencing job performance issues. In addition The Resource Center also provides free counseling services on a variety of issues. Some of these issues are: grief, depression, stress, relationships, divorce, abuse, addictions, and many others. These services are strictly confidential. Escorts
The UAB Escort Service provides students and employees with after-dark escort to or from any point on campus, including parking facilities. Escort accompanies customer to the on-campus destination either on foot or in a marked vehicle.

Parking and Transportation Services provides escort services Monday ? Friday, 5:15 p.m. until 10:15 p.m. UAB Police Dispatchers take the calls from 10:15 p.m. until dawn and will dispatch a UAB police officer or security officer to the customer?s location.

Financial Affairs
The mission of UAB Financial Affairs is to safeguard UAB's financial integrity while simultaneously accommodating the needs of the UAB community by providing relevant information and service, and to promote a creative approach to financial planning and problem-solving.

Hill University Center
The Hill University Center is the focal point of UAB campus life. The five-story building houses the following student services and offices: Student Life, Student Activities, Student Publications, University Programs, Undergraduate Student Government Association, The Campus Card Office, Registration, Minority Recruitment and Retention, College Admissions, General Studies, Financial Aid, Student Accounting, International Scholar and Student Services, Student Development, the Career Center, Testing, Academic Services, Disability Support Services, the Graduate School, and the Vice President for Student Affairs. Available services include the UAB Ticket Office, the University Bookstore, the Blazer Cafe, Jazzman's Cafe, Freshens, 24-hour automatic teller machines, check-cashing and notary public services, television and study lounges, and photocopying machines. Human Resource Management
HRM was created to serve the Employees of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. It provides support to the institution through the departments of Benefits, the Child Care Center, Compensation, Development and Training, the Employee Assistance Program, Employee Relations, Employment, and Temporary Services.

Information Technology Services
The Office of the Vice President for Information Technology (OVPIT) provides a base level of centrally administered technology services to all members of the UAB community. These services include a centralized information technology (IT) help desk called the AskIT Help Desk,IT Desktop Support, support for researchers through High Performance Computing, support for distance learning, online educational resources and increased IT security. Additionally, Information Technology supports the university's administrative business and student systems, telephone system, operator and network services.

Office of Planning and Analysis
UAB's Office of Planning and Analysis (formerly Institutional Studies and Services) serves the UAB community and external constituents by providing data, information, and analyses related to students, faculty, staff, programs, financial resources, and policies. International Scholar and Student Services

Libraries
UAB has three fine libraries, housing extensive and essential resources for students in any study area. The Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences (1700 University Boulevard ) is the primary resource for students in the Schools of Health Related Professions, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, and Public Health. The Mervyn H. Sterne Library (917 South 13th Street) primarily serves students in the Schools of Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. All students may use both libraries. Also, The Reynolds Historical Library (1700 University Boulevard) houses many unique items such as ivory anatomical mannequins, early publications of Benjamin Franklin, rare medical and scientific books and three of George and Martha Washington's letters to their dentist. Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. There is also a city library located at 2100 Park Place.

Lodging
Center for Advanced Medical Studies (CAMS): The Center for Advanced Medical Studies is UAB's home away from home for special guests and special meetings. It offers an elegantly appointed all-concierge facility for receptions, meetings, faculty retreats, dining, and overnight accommodations. TownHouse:The TownHouse provides lodging for UAB guests, hospital patients and their families. It includes low cost lodging through the Hospital Auxiliary Lodge and the Baptist Association. It is made up of fully furnished apartments, each with a kitchenette, and is within walking distance of UAB University Hospital. Laundry, vending, activity, and exercise areas are available for use by guests. Hospital social workers and patient coordinators assist with referral of patients and their families to the Townhouse. Monthly, weekly, and daily rates are available for patients, patients families. Weekly and daily rates are available for non-patient guests. Studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom units. Museums
The Samuel Ullman Museum, a multi-functional facility, was created through the cooperative efforts of the Japanese and American citizens who desired to honor the life and work of Samuel Ullman, progressive Birmingham community leader and author of the poetic essay, "Youth." News Service
The Office of Media Relations prepares and distributes information about UAB people, activities and services through print and broadcast media locally, nationally and internationally. Staff members generate media/public relations initiatives to support all units of the University, including its individual schools and departments, the UAB Health System, and special projects. In addition, staff respond to calls from the media and the public requesting information and assistance. Parking and Transportation Services
Transportation Services provides the following services: operation, management, and maintenance of all parking decks and surface parking facilities for students, patients, employees, and visitors; Max bus service to remote parking facilities; campus taxi service; and provide operation of after hours escort service UAB Fleet Operations. Accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, the UAB Police Department has earned a reputation for excellence. Printing and Mail Services
UAB Printing and Mail Services is divided into the following areas: Printing and Reproduction, Post Office, and Bulk Mail. The Print Plant provides in-house printing and copying for the UAB campus. Its services consist of color and black and white printing. Other services include pre-press operations, typesetting, custom design, color separations, camera/stripping operations, binding, quick copying, and pick-up and delivery service for its customers.

Post Office
The UAB Post Office (205/934-4595) provides daily pickup and delivery of campus-addressed mail and processes outgoing first class mail for all departments by pre-sorting and delivering to the U.S. Postal Service?s Acceptance Unit. The USPS discounts this mail, providing a savings on postage that the UAB Post Office passes on to customers. The UAB Post Office is also a contract post office for the USPS, which enables it to provide services such as priority mail, package services, express mail, special delivery, certified mail, registered mail, money orders, and stamp sales. Bulk Mail, a part of the UAB Post Office, processes all mailings and handles collating, stapling, folding, inserting, labeling, sealing, and metering mail.

Purchasing
The Purchasing Department provides support and systems to ensure effective procurement of a wide range of products and services that support teaching, research and quality patient care. The Purchasing Department provides a customer service staff along with a buying staff to assist and direct UAB departments in selecting suppliers, issuing purchase orders, awarding contracts, expediting purchase orders and resolving vendor disputes. Smolian International House
Bertha and Joseph Smolian International House offering multi-functional house offering a variety of services and activities for international students and scholars in one place. Providing temporary accommodations for international students and visitors, the International House is a central focal point for programs and activities designed to foster a free exchange of information and international understanding. Temporary Services

Ticket Office
The UAB Ticket Office is your campus source for acquiring the best seats to your favorite events in Birmingham. The UAB Ticket Office sells single tickets to events at the Alys Stephens Center, to UAB Blazers Basketball and Football home games, and to selected events sponsored by the Department of Student Life and other UAB organizations and off-campus agencies. Customers may also purchase discounted tickets to selected theater companies and theme parks. U.S. Postal stamps and stamps for international mail are also available. Training and Development
The Training and Development Office provides UAB and University Hospital employees with managerial and supervisory seminars; special courses designed for office professionals; New Employee Orientation; comprehensive computer training; two quarterly newsletters; as well as many other job-related educational opportunities in a continuous effort to improve the quality of service to both our internal and external customers. Travel Services
UAB Travel Services is a full service travel agency managed by UAB, in association with Adventure Travel. There are travel agents available to assist UAB students, employees and their families with business and personal travel arrangements, vacations, and meeting plans. Airline and hotel arrangements for groups are among the many services provided. In addition, special local, national, and international hotel rates are available exclusively through Travel Services. UAB Arena
This versatile facility seats 9,000 for a concert in the round or 8,500 for basketball games. A curtain system creates a more intimate atmosphere for audiences for varying sizes, ranging from 1,200 to capacity.

UAB HealthFinder
Health Finder is a nationwide telephone service providing UAB employees and the public with easy access to UAB physicians and health care services. Registered nurses assist callers in evaluating their particular health care needs and refer them to an appropriate physician or service. Nurses remain on the line with the caller and the receptionist making the appointment to ensure satisfaction and, if necessary, provide further assistance. Video Production:
Creative and Marketing Group: All the services of an in-house advertising agency can be found in this department within the Office of Public Relations and Marketing. It provides a full range of print and broadcast advertising services through a staff of account service representatives, copywriters, editors, graphic designers, and art directors. Warehouse Services
Warehouse Services consists of the Shipping and Receiving and Moving Departments for most departments at UAB. It picks up and delivers packages processed through Shipping and Receiving, which also has x-ray capabilities for security. Web Design and Development

WBHM Public Radio
WBHM-FM/Alabama Radio Reading Service (ARRS) WBHM, 90.3 FM is Birmingham's only full-service public radio station. The station provides public radio programming, including news and information, classical music and variety, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The Alabama Radio Reading Service provides a special statewide service for print-handicapped Alabamians. This involves reading newspapers, books, and magazines, as well as providing specialized information programs geared toward print-handicapped individuals. WBHM Phone: 934-2606.
