Admission Requirements


Incoming Freshmen:
Entering freshmen who demonstrate the potential for outstanding academic achievement are eligible to apply to the Honors College after they have been admitted to UAB.  The standard minimum requirements for admission to the Honors College are:

  1. a high school grade point average of 3.3
  2. an ACT score of 28 (not including the Writing portion) or an SAT of 1260
  3. the submission of two letters of recommendation
  4. the submission of written essays**.  

The UAB Honors College will consider applications from students who do not fully meet the minimum ACT or High school GPA qualifications.   However, please keep in mind that admission to the Honors College is highly selective with freshman entering in Fall 2012 having an average ACT score of 28.5 and a High School GPA of 3.97.  If you feel that you are a good candidate for an honors experience, we encourage you to apply to the Honors College and provide us with more information regarding your academic background and aspirations. Applicants not initially accepted into the Honors College may still be considered for admission at a later time based on demonstrated success while enrolled in UAB coursework.  Please contact the Honors College more information.


Current UAB Students:
Students currently enrolled at UAB who have a 3.3 cumulative grade point average may also be considered for admission. Interested students should contact the Honors College or Admissions Office (205-996-9842) for more information.


Transfer Students:
Students who have been accepted for transfer to UAB with a 3.3 cumulative UAB grade point average may also be considered for admission. Interested students should contact the Honors College or Admissions Office at 205-996-9842 for more information.


** If you are interested in applying to certain programs within the Honors College, additional essays may be required based on an individual program requirements.


How to Apply for Incoming Freshmen:

Students who wish to be considered for the Honors College must complete the following steps:

1.)   Complete UAB’s Application for Undergraduate Admission, preferably prior to December 1st.  To be admitted, you’ll need to complete the application online, pay your $30 application fee, and submit your transcript and SAT or ACT scores.

2.)   Complete the Honors College and/or Early Medical Professional Schools Acceptance Program Application by December 15th. There is no additional fee required for the Honors College Application.
