UAB Childcare Network

In an effort to meet the diverse demands and challenges of its employees looking for child care, UAB has developed a Childcare Network to provide parents with a list of other NAEYC-accredited child development centers and links to resources in the Birmingham area.

UAB does not endorse or recommend any particular child care center and encourages all parents to carefully evaluate any provider they are considering to care for their child.

Bad Weather Child Development Care Services are available to all essential status employees of UAB Hospital and Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital. UAB Child Development Center, UAB Human Resource Management and UAB Hospital have put together a plan to assist essential employees who are required to report to work, with child care issues in the event the Birmingham area experiences bad weather, such as winter storms and/or hurricane-like weather conditions.

Bad Weather Childcare is not available at all times and is only available once the hospital authorizes its use, typically during extended emergency closure of UAB Campus. The hospital will announce this to staff and inform the CDC that it has been activated. It is only during these events that emergency childcare is available. UAB Child Development Center requires that essential hospital employees pre-register your child(ren) for bad weather care. We only accept children ages 7 years and under.

You must complete the enrollment form and submit a current blue immunization form, faxed blue cards are acceptable. You are not cleared for services until your enrollment package is complete and your child’s current blue card is on file in the CDC office.

Submit completed packages via the following:

  • Mail to CDC campus mailing address:
    Attention UAB Child Development Center
    UCC 100, 4553
    1113 15th St. South
    Birmingham, AL 35294-4553
  • Or fax to (205) 975-7374

Parents please pack the following items when you bring your child in for bad weather care:

Infant list:

  • Wipes
  • Diapering cream (if needed)
  • Pacifier (if needed)
  • Ready-to-feed bottles
  • Baby food
  • Baby cereal
  • Favorite blanket or stuffed animal
  • Extra clothing
  • Port-a-crib
  • A few favorite (small) toys-rattles, shakers, teething toys

Preschool/school age list:

  • Sleeping bag or mat/blanket/pillow
  • Extra clothing-underwear, socks, pants, shirt
  • Favorite stuffed animal or security item (preschool)

The center will provide food and materials such as art materials, games, toys. However, if a child would like to bring items such as legos, a book to read, building block kit, or small electronic game, please write their name on the items and pack in a back-pack.

Childcare typically takes place at the UAB Child Development Center, unless the center is without power. In that case, the Hospital will provide a space within the hospital for this care to occur.
