Services for VIVA Employees and Immediate Household Members

UAB Employee Assistance and Counseling Center confidential employee assistance and counseling is provided as a benefit for VIVA employees and their immediate household members. (Members of an employee’s immediate household include individuals living in the employee’s house or who are covered by the employee’s insurance). Each covered individual is eligible for up to 12 sessions per calendar year. Employee Assistance and Counseling Center services include individual, couples, and family counseling to assist you in clarifying issues, exploring options, and finding solutions, as well as educational programs to support successful work/life integration.

Employee Assistance and Counseling Center services are voluntary. You many come to us on your own initiative or at the suggestion of a supervisor, friend, coworker or family member. Our staff of licensed counselors will help you work through issues that fall within the scope of our expertise. We will also refer you to outside agencies that specialize in medical/psychiatric, financial, legal assistance, or other resources that we believe are necessary or will be helpful to you.


We help people work through many issues, including:

  • Stress at work or home
  • Couples, relationship or family problems
  • Parenting
  • Alcohol or drug addiction
  • Smoking
  • Grief and loss
  • Loneliness
  • Communication problems
  • Depression or mood swings
  • Eating disorders
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Stress related to physical or mental illness
  • Stress related to finances.
  • Divorce

Because the Employee Assistance and Counseling Center is provided as a benefit for employees, UAB Employee Assistance and Counseling Center services are available at no cost to VIVA employees and their immediate household members.

The Employee Assistance and Counseling Center also offers Divorce Mediation services for a fee.

We also offer confidential, anonymous Online Mental Health Screening for depression, eating disorders alcoholism, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Confidentiality
Every consultation with the UAB Employee Assistance and Counseling Center is strictly confidential. Records related to your visits are stored off site and available only to Employee Assistance and Counseling Center staff. Information is not available for nor included in personnel records. Information about you is protected by law and not released to supervisors, coworkers, friends or family without specific permission approved by you in writing. Exceptions to this are dictated by law in cases such as risk of harm to self or others.

Services for VIVA ManagersThe Employee Assistance and Counseling Center also provides consultation and/or training to support supervisors in working effectively with employees who are experiencing performance problems in the workplace that may be related to problems in their personal lives. A referral to the Employee Assistance and Counseling Center allows the supervisor to concentrate on the performance problem while our staff assists the employee with possible underlying personal issues. A referral to the Employee Assistance and Counseling Center is not part of nor should it replace progressive disciplinary procedures. Most employees will come to the Employee Assistance and Counseling Center willingly if a supervisor suggests that they do so. Consult with a Employee Assistance and Counseling Center counselor and/or your HR department to learn more about this process. Telephone the Employee Assistance and Counseling Center when you have referred an employee to us and we will ask the employee if he or she is willing to sign a limited release of information to let you know if the appointment was kept, if the employee is motivated and if the employee is making progress. No information is released without the employee’s consent.
