Hand in Paw (HIP) is a non-profit organization headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. HIP's 120+ professionally trained teams of handlers and their animals help improve the day-to-day lives of people at numerous facilities throughout Central Alabama. Their goal is to improve the health and well-being of children and adults by serving those with physical, emotional, educational or psychological needs through interactions with professionally trained Animal Assisted Therapy teams.
Liz Wilson, Interim Executive Director of Hand in Paw, will be talking about the goals and benefits of Animal Assisted Activities and Animal Assisted Therapy, the history of Hand in Paw and its programs, and the scope of their current work including their partnership with UAB. She will also cover the qualifications, training and testing required to become a registered handler and animal therapy team. Amanda DuBois, Hand in Paw volunteer and Guest Services Manager at UAB Hospital, will also speak about Hand in Paw's partnership with UAB, and how staff can become more involved.
This program is offered by the UAB Employee Assistance and Counseling Center and is open to all UAB, UAB Medicine and VIVA employees.
