At UAB, we have made it a priority to increase the number of veterans in our workforce and have been actively involved in veteran recruitment and outreach. That's why the Birmingham Business Journal named UAB Birmingham's Most Veteran Friendly Employer in 2016.

    The Military Resume

    When it comes time to create your civilian job resume, the key will be translating your military experience to civilian employment.
    You can't assume potential employers will have knowledge of the military. For instance, employers with no military exposure may not understand common terminology and acronyms so you'll want to translate these into civilian terms. A good idea is to show your resume to non-military friends and ask them to point out terms they don’t understand.

    • National Resource Directory: A collection of online resources to assist with the transition from military to a civilian career.
    • Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS): VETS serves America's veterans and separating service members by preparing them for meaningful careers, providing employment resources and expertise, and protecting their employment rights.
    • Joining Forces: Dedicated to connecting servicemen and women, veterans and military spouses with the resources to help translate military skills for the civilian workforce, including new online job search and career guidance tools.

    Affirmative Action

    At UAB, we are committed to advancing our already diverse community. Please take a moment to read UAB's Affirmative Action policy to become informed on concerns with discrimination and how you should handle this should it arise.
    Current employees: Fill out the Veterans Self Identify Form and Self Identification of Disability Form to voluntarily self-identify as a veteran or individual with disabilities. Submission of this information is strictly voluntary, and refusal to provide it will NOT subject you to any adverse treatment.

     

    AWARE

    UAB employees may take advantage of the AWARE Program, which provides disability management services when an employee’s job is affected by a physical, mental or emotional impairment. The AWARE program coordinates requests for reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

     

    UAB Employee Assistance & Counseling Center

    The UAB Employee Assistance & Counseling Center (EACC) is an employee benefit designed to provide employees and their immediate household members with resources for resolving work-related and personal problems. The UAB EACC provides employee assistance, confidential counseling, community referral, supervisor consultation, crisis management and a variety of educational programs to support successful work-life integration.

    UAB Veteran Services

    Veteran Services is a valuable resource for UAB students who have served in the United States Armed Forces and who are attending college using one or more of the Educational Benefits packages. UAB proudly partners with the Veterans Administration to provide VA Yellow Ribbon benefits to qualified students.

    • Birmingham Vet Center: Assists veterans and their families with readjustment counseling and outreach services.
    • Birmingham VA Medical Center: Provides acute tertiary medical and surgical care to veterans of Alabama and surrounding states.
    • Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act: The USERRA “protects the job rights of individuals who voluntarily or involuntarily leave employment positions to undertake military service or certain types of service in the National Disaster Medical System. USERRA also prohibits employers from discriminating against past and present members of the uniformed services, and applicants to the uniformed services.”
    • National Resource Directory: A resource website that connects wounded warriors, service members, veterans, and their families and caregivers to programs and services at the national, state and local levels to support recovery, rehabilitation and community reintegration.
    • BrainLine: A national multimedia project offering information and resources about preventing, treating and living with a traumatic brain injury — including a series of webcasts, electronic newsletter and an extensive outreach campaign in partnership with national organizations concerned about TBI and PTSD.
    • Still Serving Veterans: SSV is a nonprofit dedicated to helping veterans and their families receive all the benefits and services they have earned, connecting them to other vital veteran support resources within their community, and significantly expanding their career opportunities.
