BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern Consortium for Injury Biomechanics (SCIB), a component of the UAB Injury Control Research Center (ICRC), will hold its fourth annual scientific symposium in Birmingham on Dec. 13-14. The meeting will draw the nation s leading scientists, engineers and clinicians in the field of motor vehicle injury biomechanics. Special guests this year include two executives in research and development from Honda Motor Co. Injury biomechanics is the study of what happens to the human body following major trauma, such as a car crash, said Russ Fine, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., director of the SCIB and ICRC. These researchers are trying to identify and understand the physical mechanisms resulting in traumatic injuries, so they can develop interventions and strategies that reduce the amount of energy the body absorbs in a crash, thus reducing the severity of injury. Researchers in injury biomechanics from major universities across the country will present their latest research findings at the meeting. The symposium runs from noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 2300 Woodcrest Pl., Homewood. Topics include pediatric head injury, whiplash injuries and injuries to the spine and aorta. The SCIB has made exciting developments in the area of injury biomechanics research, said Sen. Richard Shelby. These important discoveries have helped to make significant advancements to improve the safety and well-being of our citizens. I look forward to SCIB s future innovations in this emerging field. The research findings to be presented are the result of some of the nation s finest minds in injury biomechanics, working collaboratively and cooperatively, rather than competitively, which is the unique aspect of the Consortium, Fine said. The SCIB is a unique, multidisciplinary alliance of world-class engineers, physicians and scientists working collaboratively to achieve a significant reduction in motor vehicle crash-related injuries and deaths. The conference is supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the UAB ICRC and the UAB University Transportation Center.

U.S. Highway Deaths Increase in 2005

WASHINGTON -- Traffic deaths in the United States reached their highest levels since 1990, the government reported Tuesday, fueled by an increase in motorcycle and pedestrian fatalities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said 43,443 people were killed on the highways last year, up 1.4 percent from 42,836 in 2004. It was the highest number of fatalities in a single year since 1990, when 44,599 people were killed. The fatality rate also grew slightly to 1.47 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, an increase from 1.45 in 2004. It was the first increase in the fatality rate since 1986."We have no tolerance for any numbers higher than zero," said Acting Transportation Secretary Maria Cino. "Motorcyclists need to wear their helmets, drivers need to buckle up, and all motorists need to stay sober."The annual report found that motorcycle fatalities rose for the eighth straight year, growing 13 percent since 2004. The government said 4,553 motorcyclists died in 2005, compared with 4,028 in 2004. Nearly half of the people who died were not wearing helmets. Pedestrian deaths increased from 4,675 in 2004 to 4,881 in 2005. NHTSA said it was investigating the increase to try to learn what led to the growth.
