Kurosh Darvish, PhD, MS Temple University Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Kurosh Darvish began his education in his native Iran, earning a BS in 1991 and an MS in 1994, both in biomedical engineering, from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran. After completing a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Virginia in 2000, he remained there to become an assistant research professor, leading the Bio-Computational Mechanics Research Group of the Automobile Safety Laboratory. As of August 2005, Dr. Darvish will be an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Temple Unive.rsity, Philadelphia, PA, though he will continue his affiliation with Dr. Jeff Crandall and the research team at the University of Virginia. His research interests are in computational biomechanics (finite element modeling of traumatic brain injury) and material characterization of biological tissues (nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of brain tissue). He is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Society of Biomechanics, the International Society of Biomechanics and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has published several peer-reviewed journal articles, and has nearly two dozen conference publications. Dr. Darvish’s research for the SCIB involves establishing characteristics of a variety of injury effects, in both process and result, to serve as a basis for further improving the predictive capabilities of SIMon. Specifically, the project seeks to characterize the kinematics of the impact acceleration brain injury model; quantify the extent of axonal damage to the brain stem in aid of developing a topography of axonal damage in the brain stem; and, determine the brain material properties pre- and post-trauma.
