Dr. Susan Margulies earned a BSE in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University before moving to the University of Pennsylvania for an MSE (1983) and PhD (1987) in Bioengineering. She is a professor in the Bioengineering Department of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and an associate professor in the Neurosurgery Department of the School of Medicine, both at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also Director of the UPenn Bioengineering Confocal/Multiphoton Imaging Facility. Among her many honors and distinctions are the 2001 American Society of Mechanical Engineers - Bioengineering Division - R. Skalak Best Paper Award, and the 2002 Proctor and Gamble Professional Opportunity Award in Experimental Biology.
The cumulative goal of Dr. Margulies’ research interests is to determine functional and structural injury thresholds in the brain and lung, and use them to understand mechanisms of traumatic brain and lung injury. Her current focus is on traumatic head injury in adults and children; in a 2003 published study, she found that babies may be more vulnerable to serious head injury resulting from a fall than previously thought. This finding could lead to methods of distinguishing between unintentional and intentional injuries sustained by infants and children. She is involved in two SCIB-sponsored research project, functioning as co-investigator with Dr. David Meaney on one project to generate the scientific foundation necessary to validate the predictive capacities of SIMon, including brain injury thresholds, brain injury geometry, material properties for living brain tissue and boundary conditions between brain and skull. In a separate project, Dr. Margulies is overseeing the integration of datasets from non-human primate brain injury research projects at three institutions into one high-quality dataset. The resulting data will be used in validating injury predictions derived from the SIMon project.
