Dr. Jeff Crandall, Director of the UVA Center for Applied
Biomechanics, has focused his research on the mechanisms
of injury under impact loading conditions. The author
of nearly 100 scholarly articles and more than 200 additional
conference presentations, book chapters, abstracts and
posters, Dr. Crandall was selected in 2005 for a United
States Government Award for Engineering Excellence. He
is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, where
he serves as Chair of the Pedestrian Dummy Task Group.
He is also a member of several other professional organizations
including the Association for the Advancement of Automotive
Medicine, which he served as President in 1999-2000, as
well as other committee chairmanships and memberships.
He is very active in his teaching duties, developing courses
in biomechanics and supervising dozens of PhD and Masters
students, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting professionals.
He was editor of the journal Traffic Injury Prevention
from 2002 to 2004, and continues to serve as a reviewer
for several other academic journals in his field.
Dr. Crandall completed his BA in Engineering Sciences
at Dartmouth College, then continued at the University
of Virginia, earning a Masters of Engineering and a PhD
from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
He serves as a consultant to Autoliv, ASP, and has consulted,
as well, with the US Department of Transportation. From
1999 through 2002, he served on the International Editorial
Board of Vehicle Safety in the UK. He received the AAAM
Best Paper Award in both 1996 and 2002, was selected for
the Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished Speaker Award (SAE)
in 1999, and also received the Elaine Wodzin Young Achievers
Award (AAAM) in 2001.
