Dr. Albert King is responsible for the computational
side of the SCIB’s SIMon validation project being
conducted at Wayne State University. His research interests
include brain injury finite element modeling, impact trauma,
low back pains, and orthopaedic biomechanics. A Fellow
of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dr. King
has received many honors for his work, including a Smithsonian
Medal in 1998, the IRCOBI Aldman Award in 2003, and the
AAAM Award of Merit in 2004. He has published dozens of
articles in peer reviewed journals, in biomechanics and
other related fields.
After graduating with honors in civil engineering from
the University of Hong Kong in 1955, Dr. King pursued
his academic career at Wayne State University, where he
earned an MSEM in Engineering Mechanics in 1960 and a
PhD in biomechanics in 1966. He began as an assistant
professor there in 1966, rising to Professor and Chair
of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, a position
he assumed in 2002 and still holds. He is a Distinguished
Professor of Mechanical Engineering, an Associate in the
Department of Neurosurgery, an Adjunct Professor in the
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Director of the
Bioengineering Center at Wayne State University; he serves
as an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering at UAB (1994-present) and held a similar position
at the University of Michigan from 1984-88.
Dr. King holds memberships in a number of other professional
organizations including the American Institute for Medical
and Biological Engineering; Society of Automotive Engineers;
American Society of Engineering Education, and the American
Society of Biomechanics. He is a Charter Member of the
International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine,
and is on the Professional Advisory Panel of the Michigan
Safety Commission. He has served as Chairman of the Stapp
Car Crash Conference Advisory Committee every four years
since 1976, most recently in 2004.
