Adjunct Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Director, Bioengineering Center

Dr. Albert King is responsible for the computational side of the SCIB’s SIMon validation project being conducted at Wayne State University. His research interests include brain injury finite element modeling, impact trauma, low back pains, and orthopaedic biomechanics. A Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dr. King has received many honors for his work, including a Smithsonian Medal in 1998, the IRCOBI Aldman Award in 2003, and the AAAM Award of Merit in 2004. He has published dozens of articles in peer reviewed journals, in biomechanics and other related fields.

After graduating with honors in civil engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 1955, Dr. King pursued his academic career at Wayne State University, where he earned an MSEM in Engineering Mechanics in 1960 and a PhD in biomechanics in 1966. He began as an assistant professor there in 1966, rising to Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, a position he assumed in 2002 and still holds. He is a Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering, an Associate in the Department of Neurosurgery, an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Director of the Bioengineering Center at Wayne State University; he serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UAB (1994-present) and held a similar position at the University of Michigan from 1984-88.

Dr. King holds memberships in a number of other professional organizations including the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering; Society of Automotive Engineers; American Society of Engineering Education, and the American Society of Biomechanics. He is a Charter Member of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, and is on the Professional Advisory Panel of the Michigan Safety Commission.
