TRANSPORT OF CRITICALLY ILL

The Critical Care Transport Service will transfer the patient from any hospital to UAB quickly and safely.

The transcontinental jet is a fully staffed and equipped intensive care unit.

For critical care patients, UAB offers a special Critical Care Transport Service. This service, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, will transport patients and a family member from any hospital in the world to UAB in an intensive care environment. The critical care airplane, a Hawker jet, has transcontinental capabilities that allow for rapid, safe transport. On the ground, UAB Medical Center has three intensive care mobile units which are used to transport the patient from the airplane to the hospital.

The service also includes a staff of specialists from the UAB Medical Center, with a physician, an intensive care nurse and a respiratory therapist. This staff is selected according to the patient's needs, whether it is a clinical, surgical or neonatal case.

The patient's physician should arrange ambulance transport from the referring hospital to the airport. UAB's International Medical Service professionals will be glad to help coordinate all facets of a Critical Care Transport trip.
