AskIT is changing its phone support hours slightly to better serve UAB students, faculty and staff.

The AskIT help desk will now be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays; and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays. The change goes into effect Monday, Oct. 5.

AskIT professionals offer support for all of UAB’s central applications and services, as well as enhanced support for Desktop customers.

Help desk professionals are also available for walk-up support at the Center for Teaching and Learning (ETS 238, Education Building) from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays; and from 1 to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays.

You can live chat with a professional from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday by clicking on the “Live Chat” button at uab.edu/askit.

You can also submit a ticket at any time by clicking on the “Submit a Ticket” button at uab.edu/askit.

tech talkUAB IT's “Tech Talk”  series continues in June with Adobe. On June 27th,  Adobe will be on site to discuss the new Creative Cloud enterprise agreement and what all is included.  This will be a great opportunity to ask questions of Adobe and learn all of the features/functions available with UAB's Creative Cloud agreement.  Please plan to attend, and feel free to pass the invitation along to others on campus that you feel may benefit...the session is open to all faculty and staff and no registration is required.  Friday June 27th, 2pm-4pm at the Center for Teaching and Learning (2nd floor of the Education Bldg; CTL entrance across courtyard from Sterne Library).
UAB IT has announced a new enterprise licensing agreement with Adobe that covers Adobe Creative Cloud and Acrobat Pro effective June 2014.  This agreement makes the Creative Cloud products available to University faculty and staff which had not been included in previous UAB agreements with Adobe.  Creative Cloud includes products such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, and others.  Separate subscriptions for just Acrobat Pro will also be available. Ordering will be through AskIT going forward, not CDWG as in the past.  The agreement also includes improved home-use rights for faculty/staff.  Students will continue to be able to purchase Adobe products under the Student Agreement UAB already has in place.  For more information on pricing and ordering see the Adobe page here.

GraphPad Prism Software Subscriptions 

UAB now has an agreement in place with GraphPat for their Prism software at a discounted price to what is available to individual users and schools direclty from GraphPad.  

GraphPad Prism is a commercial scientific 2D graphing and statistics software published by GraphPad Software, Inc.. Prism is available for both Windows and Macintosh computers. 

  • Provides statistical guidance for novices.
  • Analysis checklists review if an appropriate analysis was performed.
  • Nonlinear regression with many options (remove outliers, compare models, compare curves, interpolate standard curves, etc.).
  • Live links. When data are edited or replaced, Prism automatically updates the results and graphs.
  • Analysis choices can be reviewed, and changed, at any time.
  • Automatic error bars. Raw data (replicates) can be entered, and then plotted as mean with SD, SEM or confidence interval.

UAB IT is aware of an issue with Optidoc and systems that have been upgraded to Java 1.7.51.  When opening Optidoc users may be prompted with an alert (see examples below).  The work around for these alerts is to click 'Run' until such time as the vendor resolves the issue.  You can also check the "Always trust content from this publisher" to prevent the alert from appearing each time you start Optidoc. While this resolution is not optimal, it is the only solution available at this time.

tech talkUAB IT is introducing a new quarterly series, “Tech Talk,”   beginning this month.  On March 19th,  Dell Field Marketing Senior Advisor, Andrew Vanderploeg will kick off our series.  The focus will be a review of end-user computing, as well as the current state of Dell and where they are headed in the future.  Please plan to attend, and feel free to pass the invitation along to others on campus that you feel may want to attend.  March 19, 2pm-4pm CEC 140.

Qualtrics Research Suite (Surveys) 

UAB has an agreement in place with Qualtrics that provides a survey tool to the UAB campus community at a discounted price to what is available to individual users and schools direclty from Qualtrics.  School-level subscriptions include faculty, staff, and students. All other subscription levels include only employees (faculty/staff).  The licensing is for campus only and does not include the UAB Hospital.  If your school or department previously had a subscription directly with Qualtrics, those subscriptions are now included under the discounted campus agreement. Contact AskIT for information on migrating your surveys to the new subscription.

Dreamspark

Microsoft Dreamspark Premium is now available to all UAB STEM programs at no cost. The Dreamspark program supports technical education by providing access to Microsoft software for learning, teaching and research purposes for faculty & students engaged in a STEM program (science, technology, engineering, math).
