Compatibility testing of Microsoft 2013 is underway.
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013
Office Professional Plus 2013 includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Access, Publisher and Lync and will be the version available to UAB under our Microsoft Campus Agreement when released to Campus.
UAB IT is testing Microsoft Office 2013 to determine its compatibility with applications and systems deployed in the UAB environment. Current testing includes Office 2013’s compatibility with the following:
- Adobe Acrobat
- Turning Point
In addition to UAB IT’s testing, we request that your department conduct its own testing of Office 2013 with applications and systems that are unique to your environment. This week we will release Office 2013 to TIMGroup for testing purposes. Please report your application compatibility results to Sterling Griffin (Sterling@uab.edu) once your testing is complete. Also include a list of any applications you use that interact with Office.
Until the testing and evaluation of Office 2013 is complete, UAB IT is not recommending it for mass deployment.

- With the registry key to disable SkyDrive in a transform file
Office 2013 uses Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud-based file-hosting service. We recommend disabling SkyDrive at this time. This can be accomplished in two ways: Using the Registry Editor and using the Group Policy Editor.
- Disabling SkyDrive by using the Registry Editor
- Launch the Registry Editor by opening the Run dialog box and entering regedit.
- When the Registry Editor opens, navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\SignIn.
- If the SignIn key doesn’t exist, create it by right-clicking on Common à New à Key à SignIn.
- In the right pane of the SignIn key, create a new DWORD value named SignInOptions.
- Double-click on SignInOptions and change its value to 3. To restore SkyDrive functionality, simply set the SignInOptions value to 0.
- Disabling SkyDrive by using the Group Policy Editor
- To use this method, you need to install the Office 2013 Administrative Templates. If you don’t have these templates, download them from the Microsoft Downloads Web site and install them.
- Once the Administrative Templates are installed, open the Run dialog box and enter gpedit.msc to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
- Now that you’re in the Local Group Policy Editor, navigate down the tree to User Configuration à Administrative Templates à Microsoft Office 2013 à Miscellaneous.
- Find the “Block signing into Office” option in the list of settings and double-click it.
- In the Properties window, click “Enable” and select the option “None Allowed.”
Current users of MATLAB are required to UPDATE the current license on their desktop before Feb 1, 2013. To update MATLAB, open MATLAB and do following:
- click on Help and then Licensing and then UPDATE.
- MATLAB will take a couple minutes to connect to the MATLAB License center and download an update license file to the users desktop.

The language, tools, and built-in math functions enable you to explore multiple approaches and reach a solution faster than with spreadsheets or traditional programming languages, such as C/C++ or Java™.
What it is
Spyware is the Internet jargon for any data collection program that secretly gathers information about you and relays it to advertisers and other interested parties. Adware usually displays banners or unwanted pop-up windows, but often includes spyware as well.
You can unknowingly install spyware when you install new software, most commonly freeware or shareware (e.g. LimeWire, BearShare, Kazaa, iMesh). Many of these programs are intended to track your Internet browsing habit, such as frequented sites and favorite downloads, and then provide advertising companies with marketing data.
Some spyware programs such as Gator, CommonName, and MarketScore, can adversely affect your computer's performance.
How to Remove It
Unfortunately, you cannot fully remove most spyware and adware programs by using the uninstall option in the Windows Add or Remove Programs control panel. To completely remove spyware from your computer, you must use a program designed for spyware & adware.

How to Avoid it It
Avoid applications that are known to carry spyware & adware. Spybot - Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware have identified the following as applications that may contain spyware or adware:

These additional steps also help avoid spyware & adware:
- Avoid advertisements
- Avoid clicking links in instant messaging software
- Frequently scan your computer with spyware detection software (included w/most anti-virus suites)
Software available through IT can either be downloaded to your system or ordered through AskIT at 6-5555 or via e-mail (AskIT@uab.edu). Where downloads are available they are the quickest way to get the software, but not all titles can be downloaded due to licensing restrictions. Check the Software Overview page for a quick list of software agreements and how the software is made available (some software is downloadable via a 3rd party site) or check the Software Download site for software that is available direclty from UAB IT. Downloads require appropriate login using your Blazer ID and password.
The Campus agreement with Microsoft covers a certain set of software on a campus-wide basis... software such as MS Office that is used by almost everyone on campus. The Campus agreement is an annual term 'site license' based on the number of faculty/staff/students covered. The Campus agreement requires renewal and payment annually to remain in effect.
The Select agreement with MS is basically a volume discount arrangement for software products not included in the Campus agreement. These products are not widely installed, but more limited to use in certain departments or on specific systems such as servers. UAB projects an annual purchase volume (by category, not by software title) and MS provides discounts based on that projection. Should UAB not meet the annual projections future pricing would be based on the actual level of purchases from the prior year.usually at a reduced level of discount. Most product purchased under the Select agreement is granted as a perpetual license with a single upfront payment. No annual renewal fee is required to continue to use the software, but maintenance/support is available as an option.

Every UAB faculty, staff, and student (where applicable) is responsible for adhering to software copyright laws and license rights. While IT Software Licensing will ensure that appropriate licensing information is published for products included on the IT web site, it is the responsibility of each school, department, faculty/staff member, and student to maintain accurate records for all software installed on their systems. Records should include the software title, date and source of the purchase (including software acquired through this web site or AskIT), and where installed. For software not covered under a UAB site license, a sales order/invoice or the original physical media/license key would qualify as proof of a valid license. Note that only one method can be used for any one software title as proof, not a combination of the two for the same application.
Communicate to everyone in your area the need to understand and follow the rights granted by the license.
- Don't use one licensed copy to install a program on multiple systems.
- Don't make unauthorized copies of disks for distribution.
- Don't use UAB software at home unless the license specifically allows it.
- Don't use software after the expiration of the license.
- Don't take advantage of upgrade offers without having a legal copy of an earlier, upgradeable version of the software.
- KEEP ACCURATE RECORDS of all software purchased/installed in your area.
Q: My department/school uses a specific software application for many users and I'm fairly sure several other departments/schools at UAB use it as well. Is there a more economical way to purchase that software
A: Possibly, through either a volume discount arrangement or through a site license. First, contact AskIT to see if any discounts are already in place. If not you can send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org for review. Make sure and include all pertinent information about the product such as areas known to be using the software, number of licenses currently owned, manufacturer, product name/version, etc., and why you feel a site license may be applicable.
