Cyber Security - Stay Secure Online

Protect Yourself, your Computer, & UAB
  • Make your passwords easy to remember, but hard to guess.
  • Lock or logoff your machine any time it is not in use.
  • Keep your system up to date on patches. Operating system, anti-virus, application, etc)
  • NEVER enter any personal information on a site that is not encrypted. Note the yellow padlock (padlock) in the bottom right corner or the right side of the address bar in your browser window)
  • Do not click links in emails from people that you do not know.
  • Report any spam or phishing attempts to UAB or other authorities.
What can UAB do for you?

UAB provides several services to help you stay safe...

  • Anti-virus & Other Software Programs
    A library of software is provided to you by UAB at reduced or no cost to you.
  • UAB IT Policies & Guidelines
    UAB IT has developed policies & guidelines to help keep our faculty, students, staff, data, & equipment safe.
  • Spam Filters
    Guidelines for setting up spam filters using several different email clients.
  • UABwifi Project
    UAB provides wifi to all users in various campus areas.
  • UABFILE (employees only)
    Each UAB employee is provided with 1Gb of storage on UABFILE (additional space is available at $45/Gb per year). UABFILE is located in a secure facility, and backups are performed daily.
  • PGP Whole Disk Encryption (employees only)
    PGP is available to all UAB faculty & staff through the IT office. UAB is attempting to protect data in the case of loss or theft of devices. High risk areas are being targeted for the initial rollout.
  • UAB Drop Box (employees only)
    Need to deliver large files to people without clogging up your email accounts? Use the UAB drop box!

Sensitive Data - Defined
Sensitive data is any one or more pieces of information that can be used to identify a person. It can be a combination of:
  • Name
  • Social Security Number
  • Date of Birth
  • Medical Diagnosis
  • Credit/debit card numbers
  • Passwords, security codes, & PINs
Data Security Incidents

Notify Data Security (205.975.0842) immediately if you notice anything unusual or suspicious. Security incidents include:

  • Unauthorized use of a system or password
  • Theft of or damage to UAB equipment
  • Violations of UAB standards & policies
  • Malicious code and/or hacking attempts
  • Breaches of any type of sensitive data
