PGP Whole Disk Encryption
Mac Installation Instructions

Note: The PGP Software does not currently provide boot disk encryption for Mac OS X systems though the vendor may support it in the future. The PGP Desktop software allows access to encrypted USB drives and volumes on the Mac. For drive encryption, IT strongly recommends the use of OS X’s FileVault feature to protect user folders.

Prepare your computer

  1. Back up your Data. Before downloading or installing the PGP software, be sure to backup your data. You can do so by saving any important files to USB flash drive, CD, network drive, or removable disk. Also, make sure you have copies of all software on your computer.
  2. Check your network connection. Before be sure your computer is plugged into a wall outlet and connected to the UAB network. If you are not on campus, be sure you are running your Virtual Private Network (VPN) software.

Download and install PGP software

  1. Go to the UAB Software Library, located at www.uab.edu/it/software. Locate the PGP software and click to begin downloading.
  2. Once the program has downloaded, double-click to unzip the PGP.pkg Installer.
  3. Click Continue to run Installer for PGP Desktop 9.
  4. Read the licensing agreement when prompted and click Agree.
  5. Select the hard drive you wish to install the program onto and click Continue.
  6. Click Custom Installation. Select Install PGP Whole Disk Encryption.
  7. Click Install.
  8. Enter your BlazerID and password in the Name: and Password: fields when prompted.
  9. Once installation has complete, click Close. The Setup Assistant will appear.
  10. Under Setup Assistant, select Always allow keychain access. Select I am a new user, and then Continue. Enter a username and strong passphrase (not your BlazerID and corresponding password)
  11. On the PGP Key Creation screen, click Skip.
  12. Restart your computer.

Note: It is recommended that you continue to use FileVault for your folder encryption until PGP supports boot encryption on OS X.
