General Access Requirements

Authorized users may access Administrative Applications via the Administrative Systems web page.

Who is Eligible?

Official UAB employees and students may access specific UAB administrative systems with proper authorization. UAB maintains an Electronic Phonebook (that interfaces with Netscape’s LDAP directory) of current or recently retired employees, and incoming or recently/currently enrolled students. These entries are extracted from the official Human Resources and Registrar's databases. Click here for a diagram of the process. People who are entered in the Electronic Phonebook are eligible to get a BlazerID and strong password that allows access to several resources across campus, including the Oracle Administrative Applications and the BlazerBytesData Warehouse. The legacy mainframe applications use a combination of nightly extracts from the Electronic Phonebook and ACF2 security software to determine eligibility for system access.

Qualified users may get a BlazerID by clicking here or by calling AskIT at 996-5555.

Oracle HR Payroll and Financial Applications

Users must have a BlazerID and be authorized to specific application responsibilities to access the system. For more information on BlazerIds, application access and application responsibilities click here.UAB’s Oracle Administrative Applications security consists of both hardware and software components. The external hardware layer is a three tiered server environment that is bordered by redundant firewalls and SSL Encoder/Decoders. Internal security depends on a combination of 1) BlazerIds from UAB's Phonebook/LDAP Directory and the Oracle Internet Directory to authenticate Oracle Application users, and 2) departmentally assigned application responsibilities that authorize users to specific screens and data. The general UAB community has ad hoc access to authorized data through the KBACE reporting tool that utilizes a middle server tier and takes advantage of internal Oracle application responsibilities to maintain appropriate levels of data security and firewall integrity. Users must accept one of the following agreements when logging in to gain access to the system.

BlazerBytes Data Warehouse

To access the system, warehouse users must have a BlazerID, sign a confidentiality agreement, have the approval of their department head and participate in a warehouse training course. Please click here for more information.

Legacy Student System

Authorized users may login to the legacy applications through a secure, encrypted web connection (using OpenConnect 3270 emulation software). Access is also possible using the Hummingbird 3270 emulation desktop client software. This connection is not encrypted. Acquiring access to legacy administrative systems is a several step process.

All people requiring access must have a legacy mainframe LogonID. People who are identified as active UAB employees in the Oracle Human Resources system may request a LogonID through User Services by clicking here.

For Student applications, the Student Affairs data administrator requests via EmailAddress that User Services set up a specific type of access for a person. User Services enters the request into the ACF security system. When the setup is completed User Services notifies the data administrator and the user, via EmailAddress, that the request has been satisfied. Student Affairs and User Services are implementing a web page that allows the Student Affairs data administrator to view an online screen of users and their types of access.

More information on ACF2 and the authorization process is available in the User Services Documentation Repository (USDR) located on the administrative mainframe. Refer to document 355, HOOKUPS Manual: Access to Mainframe Applications.
