Robert McCullumsmith, M.D., Ph.D.
(a.k.a. Robert E. Smith)

Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, and Research Investigator, Molecular & Behavioral Neuroscience Institute

I am currently a clinical lecturer (10%) and research investigator (90%) in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I work with Dr. Jim Meador-Woodruff in the Department of Physiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology examining molecular abnormalities of severe psychiatric illness, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. I am involved in a number of projects that are based on the overarching hypothesis that glutamate neurotransmission is abnormal in schizophrenia. These projects all involve examination of different levels of gene expression in human postmortem brain tissue.
