2012 Cyber Summit a Success |
On Thursday, February 23rd, UAB's Center for Information Assurance and Joint Forensics Research (CIA/JFR) held its first annual Cyber Summit: 2012 at the UAB National Alumni House. The event brought together more than 80 people interested in cybercrime and computer forensics, including UAB President Carol Garrison, CAS Dean Thomas DiLorenzo, UAB and UA-Huntsville faculty members, and some 60 representatives from business and industry including J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Facebook, PayPal, and e-Bay. "Schemes by cyber criminals are growing increasingly more sophisticated, moving far beyond the old phishing schemes that plant malware designed to steal personal information," said keynote speaker Rod Rasmussen, president of Tacoma-based Internet Identity. "Today's cyber thieves are creating widespread havoc by going after e-mail service providers hired by major corporations, including banks."
The event featured a tour of the UAB Computer Forensics Laboratories, jointly sponsored by Justice Sciences and the Department of Computer and Information Sciences and directed by Gary Warner, a catered luncheon, and break-out sessions during the afternoon at which UAB faculty described their cyber-related research to industry represenatives.
Justice Sciences' faculty members Dr. Elizabeth Gardner and Dr. John Sloan, who co-founded the Center with Dr. Anthony Skjellum, participated in the event. Dr. Gardner did a presentation on her research on pharmecuitical spam, while Dr. Sloan served as a moderator of an Industry Roundtable that featured Mr. Rasmusson, as well as representatives from Bank of America, Facebook, and PayPal.

CJSO Students Participate in Polar Plunge |
|
As part of 2012 Law Enforcement Torch Run, the Criminal Justice Student Organization (CJSO) helped raise over $13,000 for Special Olympics in Alabama. The 2nd Annual Polar Plunge took place on Sat. Jan 28, 2012, where law enforcement agencies from all over Alabama “plunged” into the frigid waters of Oak Mountain State Park. Students Megan Talley, Carley Bodin, Austin Rosenhow, Danielle Tyson, David Holloway, Stephanie Matthewson, and Riley Spence "took the plunge" for a good cause. |

Professor Grimes Returns from Afghanistan |
The Department is pleased to announce that Pre-Law Program Director and Assistant Professor (COL) John Grimes recently returned to the UAB campus following a 15 month deployment to Afghanistan where he served in the role of Senior Intelligence Officer, National Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC), from October 2010 through January 2012. During this period, Grimes led a team of more than 180 NGIC all-source intelligence analysts geographically dispersed throughout the Afghanistan Theater of Operations.
Following this recent military intelligence experience in a forward deployed environment, COL Grimes has been invited to participate in the US Army War College's Annual Strategic Controller Exercise in Carlisle Barrack, Pennsylvania February 23 - March 9, 2012. The US Army War College represents the final educational requirement for promotion to the rank of General Officer in the US Army. |

Forensic Science Program Named One of Nation's Best |

Forensics-School.com (http://top10.forensics-school.com/) , an online provider of information about forensic science education and training programs, recently ranked the department's Master of Science in Forensic Science (MSFS) Program as #6 in the nation. Forensics-School.com commented on the program: "There's a certain respect an academic program can demand when it's one of the first in its field. In the world of forensics, we can roughly divide the schools into two groups: pre-CSI: Miami and post-CSI: Miami. Nothing against the newer schools. It's just that the University of Alabama at Birmingham was doing forensics before forensics was cool ."[emphasis added] Congratulations to Drs. Linville and Gardner for being recognized as having one of America's best academic programs in forensic science! |

Mock Trial Team Fall Updates |

The UAB Mock Trial Team has now completed its fall competitive season. In October, the team participated in an invitational tournament held at the University of Georgia which featured 18 teams from 13 schools including Wake Forest, the University of Florida, the University of North Carolina, and Florida State University. The White Team compiled a record of 5 wins and 3 losses, while the Green team went 4.5 wins (1 tie) and 3 losses. Individual awards for “Outstanding Attorney” went to Grady Lowman and Brian Price. Competition continued in November when the team visited Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and competed in the MTSU “Mid-South Mock Trial Invitational Tournament.” Some 30 schools sent 48 teams to the competition, including Vanderbilt, Emory, Georgia Tech, Southern Methodist University, and the Universities of Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. UAB faced teams from Rhodes College, Ole Miss, the University of South Carolina, Georgia, and Georgia Tech. The UAB White Team went 4.5 wins (1 tie) and 3 losses; the Green Team went 4 wins and 4 losses; and the Gold Team went 3 wins and 5 losses. Grady Lowman and Brian Price again won “Outstanding Attorney" awards. The team resumes competition in February at the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) Regional Tournament that will be held in Jackson, MS.
UAB Alumni Nathan Mays (’08) and Joseph Dease (’09) assumed the reins this year as team Coach and Assistant Coach respectively, taking over from Renee Kirby who served as Coach during 2010-2011. Click here for more information on Mock Trial.
