Board picks Hill as new Alabama 2-year chancellor
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) _ The State Board of Education picked a Georgia educator Friday to become chancellor of Alabama’s two-year college system and help lead it back from a financial scandal that brought down a former chancellor.

Freida Hill, deputy commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia, was unanimously chosen by the nine-member board. Women have served as interim chancellors in the past but Hill is the first female to hold the position on a permanent basis.

The board’s chairman, Gov. Bob Riley, said he talked to Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue before deciding to support Hill.
``I’m not too sure I’ve ever heard someone as highly recommended,’’ Riley said.

The other finalists for the job were John Osborn, the director of academic programs and policy for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Rose Johnson, the president of Haywood Community College in Clyde, N.C.
Hill, who holds a doctorate in adult education from the University of Georgia, has spent most of her career in education, beginning as a high school English teacher in Maryville, Tenn., in 1973.

She became deputy commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia in February 2008. Prior to that, she served as assistant commissioner and as president of Southwest Georgia Technical College in Thomasville.
Pending negotiation of a contract and passing a background check, Hill will replace Bradley Byrne, who resigned in May to run as a Republican candidate for governor.

Truck driver rescued from cab dangling off bridge
DECATUR, Ala. (AP) _ A truck driver got quite a fright when the cab of his 18-wheeler dangled off a bridge in north Alabama after an accident.

The seven-vehicle accident happened around 9 p.m. Friday on the northbound side of Interstate 65 on the Tennessee River Bridge.

Emergency crews used a ladder to remove the driver from the cab of the truck. The cab had been dangling off the bridge about 150 feet above the water below, which is about 30 feet deep at that point.

State troopers reported only a few minor injuries.

At least one lane of northbound I-65 remained closed Saturday morning to allow crews to work on repairing the guardrail.

Ala. waste company charged with illegal disposal
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) _ A Mobile waste disposal company and two top executives are facing federal charges of illegal disposal of waste.

The U.S. Department of Justice said Friday a federal grand jury in Mobile has indicted DHS Inc. and its president, Donald Gregory Smith and manager William Wilmoth Sr., alleging numerous violations of the Clean Water Act.

Company officials issued a statement denying the allegations and saying they will defend themselves vigorously.
``Roto-Rooter’s management and employees have cooperated at every turn in addressing inquiries and information requests by the U.S. Attorney concerning the actions of a former, terminated employee,’’ officials said in the statement. ``Roto-Rooter and its management have attempted to work with (Mobile Area Water and Sewer System) over the years in an effort to improve its grease control program and make it more effective.’’

They are accused of dumping into sewers thousands of gallons of waste grease and oil. The company is a Roto-Rooter franchisee and operates under that name.
