Polcari goal wins tourney spot

Sophomore midfielder Carolyn Polcari scored two goals, including the game-winner just over four minutes into the first overtime, to lead the UAB women’s soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory at Memphis on Thursday night. With the win, the Blazers have secured a spot in the 2009 C-USA Tournament.

“This was a great win,” UAB head coach Paul Harbin said. “We struggled a little in the first half, but we made a couple of halftime adjustments and everyone got on the same page. I thought we did a much better job in the second half and executed well.”

Polcari’s game-winning goal came at the 94:23 mark on the first shot of the overtime session. The Blazers had possession deep in the Tigers’ defensive third of the field and sophomore Laura McCalla served a ball in that Memphis tried and failed to clear. Polcari gathered the loose ball and chipped a shot from eight-yards out over the head of goalkeeper Elise Kuhar-Pitters.
