Lorenzo García-Amaya (PhD, Indiana University) holds a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Seville, Spain, and an MA in Hispanic Linguistics from Indiana University. His research focuses on the development of fluency and cognitive abilities, such as lexical access and attention control, by second language learners of Spanish in different learning contexts (overseas immersion vs. standard college-based instruction). His most recent work examines topics such as inhibitory effects of the L1 over the L2, methodological improvements to fluency measurements, and the relationship between clause type and filled pauses in second language speech.
García-Amaya also conducts research on Spanish SLA from a variationist perspective. With other co-authors from Indiana University he investigates the acquisition of Spanish variable structures by L2 learners in an overseas immersion program. This research group has recently published their developmental findings on the acquisition of clitic pronouns and also of the present perfect. Another strand of his research on sociolinguistic variation focuses on Andalusian Spanish, specifically on the production of dental sibilants and intonational contours by speakers of Jerez de la Frontera.
He has presented his work at the current major conferences in his fields of expertise such Second Language Research Forum (SLRF), American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL), Hispanic Linguistics Symposium (HLS), Kentucky Foreign Language Conference (KFLC), and Phonetics and Phonology in the Iberia (PaPI).
García-Amaya has extensive experience teaching Hispanic Linguistics and L2 Spanish in the US and in the study abroad context. In addition to working at Indiana University and Northern Illiniois University, he was the Director of the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages in León, Spain from 2004 through 2010.
