Collection Information

LHL Online Catalog

Lister Hill Library uses the Horizon integrated library system. You should search the LHL Online Catalog to determine if the Library owns a particular book, journal title, or audiovisual. For a listing of the library's electronic journal holdings search the E-Journals list.

Books & Dissertations

The best option for finding books in the library's collection is the LHL Catalog. Most of the books in Lister Hill Library are shelved according to the NLM subject classification scheme (National Library of Medicine) [NLM Classification Summary].

Other Special Collections/Locations include: E-books, Alabama, Cunningham, Fletcher, Oversize, Reference, Reserve, Reynolds Historical Library, University Archives, and University Hospital. For more information, ask at the Information Desk or call (205) 934-2230.

Dissertations, now received only in electronic format, can also be found in the library catalog.

Databases & Resources

In addition to the online catalog, the library provides access to a number of major health-oriented databases. To access these, use the Databases & Resources link from the home page.  More detailed information on all the individual databases is available from that document. Anyone can use a public workstation with the Library. Remote (off-campus) access options are available and free to UAB faculty, staff, and students through the web page.  Note that remote access requires use of a BlazerID and password. License agreements restrict remote electronic access to most of the library's purchased resources to current UAB faculty, staff, and students; however, a number of quality free health information resources may also help.

Electronic Full Text Journals

Lister Hill Library provides access to many journals. Most of the journals are online only, with a minority only sold to us as “electronic including a print copy.” Full-text journals are noted in the online catalog. In addition, a full list of electronic full-text journals is also provided. Access to the full text for most of these journals is available anywhere in the world to current UAB faculty, staff, and students using their BlazerID and password. All can be accessed by walk-in users to the library by using a public computer within the library. Copyright limitations and publisher licensing restrictions frequently restrict access to the full text of the articles.

Print Journals

Journals can be identified using the online catalog; however, to identify journal articles by subject, author, etc., any of a number of different databases or traditional paper indexes are available.
The Library currently subscribes to about 1000 print journal titles. The most recent issues (the current volume) of the current journals are shelved in a special browsing collection called Current Display located on the ground floor. The rest of the journals from 1995 to the present are located on the ground floor in alphabetical order. Pre-1995 journals are located in the basement in compact storage in alphabetical order. Journals (bound & unbound) do not circulate.

Media

Audiovisual material is located in the open stacks. Search the LHL Catalog using the keyword video* to determine what we own and its availability.
