RESIDENCY RESOURCES @ LHL

Choosing a residency program is a big decision for every medical student.  LHL provides access to several resources to help make the decision a little easier.

*"The Green Book" - This printed AMA source is really called the Graduate Medical Education Directory. Updated yearly, it includes listings of all accredited graduate medical education programs with details such as program size and contact information, in order by specialty.  Other helpful sections of the Green Book include new and withdrawn programs, board certification requirements and licensure information.  Copies of this book are available in reference and at the Information Desk under the call number, WX 22 D628.

*FREIDA online - Also from the AMA, FREIDA stands for Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database Access.  It is essentially an online Green Book as it lists residency and combined specialty programs. Many search parameters are available.  FREIDA is on the web free at http://www.ama-assn.org/freida.

*Specialty Resources - The library has books on residency information for some medial specialties such as pathology.  Check with library staff or Horizon (online catalog) for more information.

*Printed Books about the Matching Process - We have several titles designed to guide students through the process of making the match.  First Aid for the Match: insider advice from students and residency directors is found in the circulating collection on 2nd floor at W 20 L46f.  Also, a Medical Student's guide to strolling through the Match or the what, where, when, why and how of residency selection, is available in the Reference Collection at W 20 M4680.  Other books can be found by searching Internship and Residency in Horizon (online catalog.)

*ERAS - From the American Association of Medical Colleges, ERAS stands for Electronic Residency Application Service and is a service which transmits residency applications, and supporting credentials from medical schools to residency program directors using the Internet.  It can be used on all LHL computers with the accompanying disk from Medical Student Services.

For more information on any of these sources or others, contact the Information Desk at 934-2230.
