ALABAMA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION EDUCATION COMMITTEE WORKSHOP 2000

On February 11th, the Education Committee of the Alabama Library Association sponsored a workshop teleconference titled "SSPP: Simple Solutions for Preservation Problems" held at five locations throughout Alabama.

The morning session, teleconferenced among sites in Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Tuscaloosa, featured presentations on such topics as the Nature of Materials, Book First Aid, Bindery 101, Disasters (Large & Small), and Digital Age Preservation.  Presenters included Patty Pilkerton (Sterne Library-UAB), Elizabeth Wells (Samford University Archives) Patricia Watson (Birmingham Public Library), Denise Oliver (St. James High School), Mary Laughlin (Mobile Public Library), Betty Conn (Birmingham Public Library) and Leigh Caskey Scheck (Redstone Scientific Information Center).  The event was moderated by Ann Marie Pipkin (Hoover High School) and Fred Olive (UAB Educational Technology Services).  The Birmingham session, coordinated by LHL's Ellen Griffin, met at UAB's 15th Street Classroom Building.

The afternoon session at each site consisted of hands-on presentations and tours of area facilities:  Birmingham Public Library Archives, Redstone Scientific Information Center in Huntsville, Mobile Municipal Archives, Alabama Department of Archives and History (Montgomery), and Tuscaloosa Library Bindery.
