HEALTH INFONET RECEIVES NLM FUNDING

Health InfoNet of Jefferson County was one of 49 health information projects across 34 states to receive funding by the National Library of Medicine as part of an initiative to help the public use online health information.  Dr. Donald Lindberg, Director of the National Library of Medicine, made the announcement about the funding initiative, noting that these projects are "imaginative and well-targeted" and that "they will stimulate medical libraries, local public libraries and other organizations to work together to provide new electronic health information services for all citizens in a community."
Lister Hill Library will use this funding to support a stipend and tuition assistance for a graduate student web site manager/designer for the Health InfoNet site (http://www.uab.edu/infonet) for a year.  Some of the funding will also go to publicize the InfoNet services.  Health InfoNet of Jefferson County, which was formally initiated last fall, is a cooperative library-based consumer health information service, with partners including Lister Hill Library, the local public libraries and various voluntary health agencies and community health care providers.  For more information about the NLM funding see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/news/press_releases/ehip.html.
