CINAHL : The Basics Getting Started
| The default screen is a basic keyword search that allows you to enter search terms. |
You can enter keywords one at a time or combine them with Boolean operators, AND, OR, and NOT.
- AND narrows your results -- you should get fewer results, but they should be more relevant to your topic.
- OR expands the search -- you might get more results, but they will be broad.
- NOT is for when you need to exclude something from your search. Be careful though using NOT can prevent you from retrieving relevant results.
| Your results list will show you ten results per page that you can sort by Date, Source, Author, and Relevance. You can also group your results into Periodicals, CEUs, and Research Instruments. |
| Once you have found an article that interests you check to see if it is fulltext. |
| If you see the symbol below that means that CINAHL provides direct access to the fulltext! |
| In the example below CINAHL does not provide direct access to the fulltext, but Lister Hill may subscribe to another database vendor that does! By using Article Linker you can locate the fulltext through CINAHL using a service called Serials Solutions. Read more about Article Linker here! |
Once you select the button you can navigate to the fulltext either online, if available, or in print. |
| If there is no online content you'll see this message. |
