A grievance is defined as a complaint against a staff member or concern regarding patient care and/or services provided. If a client believes they have been wronged, mistreated in any way or denied services, this would be defined as an appropriate grievance. Filing of a grievance is done without fear of reprisal.

How to file a grievance?
  • If you have a problem or complaint, you may first talk with your healthcare team to try and resolve the problem.
  • If the problem is not adequately resolved, you may contact the UAB Guest Services to file a grievance. To file a grievance, you can do either of the following:
       1. Request assistance from a patient advocate by calling 205-934-CARE (2273).
       2. Send a written letter of unresolved grievance to: UAB Hospital/Ambulatory Clinics, Chief Operating Officer, Suite 502, 500 22nd Street South, Birmingham, AL 35233.

All client grievances are managed by UAB Guest Services. The organization attempts to resolve grievances within 7 days, however, this may not always be possible based on the complexity of the grievance or other circumstances. A patient advocate will communicate with you about the status of your grievance. All questions about the status of your grievance should be directed to UAB Guest Services (205-934-CARE).
