The McGahey Awards were endowed by Mr. James Herbert White and his wife, Mrs. Virginia McGahey White in honor of her father, Dr. Robert Goodloe McGahey. Dr. McGahey was one of the first physicians to practice anesthesia in Alabama, and he joined the American Association of Anesthesia in 1916. Dr. McGahey had an office in Birmingham's West End and was long associated with the Birmingham Infirmary, which became Birmingham Baptist Hospital, a forerunner of Baptist Medical Center-Princeton. Beginning in 1995, the McGahey Award for Outstanding Medical Student in Anesthesiology was awarded to a graduating UAB School of Medicine (UABSOM) medical student demonstrating the most outstanding performance during an anesthesiology rotation. The McGahey Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching, established in 2001, is awarded to the faculty member and resident voted the best teachers by the medical students rotating through the department.
