  • Shadowing Opportunities: What to Expect

Shadowing in the clinical setting allows for valuable exposure to anesthesia. Students will be paired with clinical faculty in the general OR, CVOR, OB, ICU or Highlands-Hospital Pain Treatment Clinic for approximately two hours. It is important to note that shadowing experiences are for observation only – no patient contact is permitted. Students will be able to see what a daily routine for an anesthesiologist entails with experience in the specific location that you will be involved. You might see various procedures that anesthesiologists perform on a regular basis. The purpose of our shadowing experience is to give the student a small taste of what a career in anesthesia might look like, to allow the student a more educated decision on how to proceed in their own medical journey.

If you are interested in shadowing experience in the UAB Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, please complete the following steps and email the requested documents and information to Carol Anne Hopper, cahopper@uabmc.edu, to be contacted for scheduling.

     1. Read and sign the Observer Manual and Policy.

     2. Provide a copy of updated CV

     3. Specify if specific days of the week are needed

     4. Please specify if any subspecialty is of interest: cardiovascular, obstetrics, critical care medicine, and pain treatment. If not, then you will be assigned to a clinical faculty member that is working in the general operating rooms for that day.

Please note that we will do our very best to schedule you when and with whom you would prefer in order to maximize your clinical exposure and experience, but our clinical faculty have their own schedules that change frequently and we are not always able to accommodate all students requests.
