The Training Program
The UAB Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Residency Program is a national leader in anesthesia education, combining broad clinical experiences, a strong didactic program and opportunities for leadership, research, and unique educational opportunities. The department performs more than 55,000 anesthetic procedures annually at University Hospital, UAB Highlands, Callahan Eye Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Alabama and Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
The educational environment is supportive and collaborative, ensuring all residents obtain a broad set of skills and knowledge, but also allowing each resident the opportunity to focus on individual interests. Such an environment promotes clinical excellence, sparks investigative interests and helps to develop administrative and teaching skills that will be applicable throughout an evolving career. Upon graduation, our graduates enter the practice of their choice, whether private or academic, and rapidly develop the respect and admiration of their colleagues and patients.
Our residency classes include 21 residents in each of the three years of clinical anesthesiology training. In addition, a Clinical Base Year is offered with 15 PGY-1 positions currently available.
