Cardiac Anesthesiologist

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for faculty positions in cardiothoracic anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.  Academic rank, tenure status, and salary are commensurate with experience. The Department is a recognized leader in clinical anesthesia, graduate and postgraduate education, and scientific inquiry through basic and translational research. The Department employs over 100 faculty members involved in the delivery of patient care and research activities in addition to more than 70 CRNAs, 90 residents or fellows, and 60 supporting staff members.  Approximately 3,000 adult cardiac and thoracic cases are performed annually involving the complete range of cardiothoracic surgery including major aortic surgery (with circulatory arrest or partial bypass), mitral or aortic valve repairs, high risk myocardial revascularization, and procedures for heart failure. The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia provides care for adult heart, lung, heart-lung transplantation, and left ventricular assist devices as bridging and destination therapy.  UAB’s multidisciplinary  extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program is one of the busiest and most successful in the nation supporting over 120-150 adult & pediatric patients per year. The  program is based in our dedicated Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, with 24/7 support by  ECMO perfusion services, cardiothoracic & critical care anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and nurses trained in ECMO.  UAB also has one of the highest volume 3D navigational bronchoscopic and robotic thoracic centers in the world performing robotic esophageal procedures and mediastinal tumor resections.  State-of-the-art equipment and advanced monitors, including 3-D transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), cerebral oximetry, and oximetric pulmonary artery catheters are utilized extensively in every cardiovascular OR and ICU. Subspecialty certification or completion of an ACGME accredited Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship is required.
